Building light in segments?

I am wondering , is there some way to build the light in segments ? I have a large terrain that I need alot of trees on . Problem is lightmass is crashing , not enough memory . I have 16 gb ram , I get that this might not be enough , but there has to be some way to use disk cache or just build the light for parts of the terrain . I have lightmass importance volumes set up , they are as tight as I can get them to be . I use the speedtree broadleaf mesh and I have billboards and LOD’s set up , but just can’t build light .
