Marketplace license for distribution of educational maps

Hi,
I wanted to clarify a bit of a grey area with regard to the existing marketplace terms.
I want to build a game level for teaching game design concepts using assets from the marketplace.

So the terms say “Each such product built using content purchased on the Marketplace must be a standalone creative work (such a game, simulation, or video) in which content is merely a component and not the primary focus. For example, it may not be a content pack for distribution to engine users.” and I feel that I’m within those terms.

The grey area is that this will not be a ‘stand-alone’ game that’s been packaged (and therefore the assets locked in an inaccessible). In order for the students to be able to modify the level I’ll be distributing the original project folder. This means that they’ll have access to the original marketplace assets. Now in theory in terms of the law students are generally treated as ‘employees’ of the university (at least in UK law) so in theory I’m OK making any content I buy available to them ? What if I wanted to distribute the educational package more widely ?

I’m pretty sure that I won’t be alone in this situation so it would be great if we could get some clarity on this. I don’t really want to have to make everything myself from scratch, but I appreciate that just buying and using marketplace assets for this kind if distribution is maybe not straightforward under the current terms.

Thanks,
R.

I would appreciate and answer to this, or at least an acknowledgement that someone it looking into this. It affects every university and college in the world using UE4…

I agree that this is a grey area. That stems from Epic’s interest in facilitating your projects but not subverting the Marketplace by allowing parties to gain access to the materials without having paid.

To me, having a sample level with some paid Marketplace content that is incidental to the level contained therein that is distributed to students (who are themselves each UE4 licensees) for educational purposes, that fits within the EULA.

When you say a wider distribution, this is unclear and seems to veer closer to the line, if not crossing over it.

OK thanks Canon, I agree it’s a tricky one and this clarifies it a little. In the past we’ve made our educational levels available to everyone, not just our own students, so it seems we’ll need to avoid using marketplace materials in this case.
Thanks,
R.
