Can't go fullscreen with Oculus anymore

To make this short, I’m having the exact same problem as these two people:

I’ve followed all of their troubleshooting steps and had the same outcome. I would like to note creating games, running them in the editor, as well as packaging them and running them all worked fine for several weeks. Then, suddenly, it stopped being able to maximize to fullscreen with no apparent changes. Like the second person above, I am able to package a game first, and then set FullscreenMode=1 in my GameUserSettings.ini in order to run fullscreen on my desktop, but this doesn’t work in the Oculus Rift.

As of now I have no way to run a game created in UE4 on the Oculus Rift in fullscreen mode. Neither of the people that asked this same question have been able to get a resolution that will fix that issue. The first person’s issue was closed in hopes that a reinstall of Windows would help, but it didn’t. The second person’s issue was closed by suggesting they use a workaround and set FullScreenMode=1, which will not work for Oculus Rift.

My problem and symptoms are exactly the same as these two. Here is info unique to me:

  • I’m on a Windows 7 machine
  • Tried both a Quadro K5000 and GTX 650 (both 2GB) with no luck
  • This worked fine for several weeks, then stopped. I originally hoped it might be something with the Oculus or Oculus related, but I tried games created in Unity and they run fine on the Oculus.
  • I’m using the Oculus Rift DK2

Hey cwigginton-

When you say that that you cannot go fullscreen with the Oculus, what happens when you try? Is the Oculus screen black and not showing the game or is there something else happening. Any information you can provide about what happens when you try to fullscreen your game will help us identify what the problem is.

Sorry I didn’t provide more information. My symptoms and situation are identical to both those other posts, so I didn’t go into too much detail.

At first, any attempt to “alt-enter” and go full screen on a game whether on the Oculus or not would result in the game screen going black for half a second, then minimizing down to the taskbar. Any effort to restore the minimized window would result in it popping up a black screen for half a second, then it would minimize itself again. I would just end up closing it from the taskbar. This happened whether I was trying to play a standalone game from the editor or building the game and running from the computer.

After reading through those other two posts from people experiencing the same thing, I followed the advice of the 2nd person and built the game first, and then changed the settings to FullscreenMode=1. A built game would then run fullscreen on the computer, but not in the rift.

Okay then, thanks for the information. I do have a couple other questions that will help narrow down what is going on. Which version of the engine are you working with and which drivers are you running for the Oculus? Also in the Rift Display Mode window is the radial set to Direct HMD Access or Extend Desktop?

I initially had the error happen while working with Unreal Engine 4.4.3. I have never used any other version. I downloaded and ran 4.3.1 and had the same error.

As for the Oculus, I’m running SDK 0.4, Firmware version 2.12. The display mode of the rift is relevant info I seem to have left out:

1: Inside the editor running a standalone game:

  • With the rift turned off I get a working single framed game until I try to go fullscreen, in which case it turns into a black screen and minimizes.
  • With the rift in Direct HMD mode I get no response from the rift at first. The game loads as a single frame on the desktop. Then, when I go fullscreen, the rift wakes up, head tracking and stereoscopic vision work, and it also displays on the computer monitor as well. In this mode, FPS is about 3-5 frames per second.
  • With the rift in Extended Display mode the game works in a single (non-stereoscopic) view until I try to go fullscreen, at which point the screen goes black and minimizes.
2: Outside the editor after the game has been built:
  • With the rift turned off I get a black screen that flashes and then minimizes.
  • With the rift in Direct HMD, in non-full screen mode the rift displays full screen and the desktop displays a window, both are stereoscopic. Trying to maximize the desktop window kills the communication with the rift. While letting them both run (both desktop and HMD), I get 15 FPS.
  • With the rift in Extended Display mode the screen goes black as soon as I try to load it and then minimizes.

You may need to reinstall the drivers/firmware for the Oculus. The link below is a guide that should help you double check that everything is setup correctly for the Oculus. https://docs.unrealengine.com/latest/INT/Platforms/Oculus/QuickStart/index.html
