4.5 preview breaks rag doll / animation blendweight

Hi.

Windows 7 64Bit

It appears that 4.5 preview is breaking the rag doll blend-weight ./ animation harmony if i can call it that.
Basically in 4.4.3 when rag doll is enabled and character physics are being simulated it behaves as expected.

But in 4.5 if you move the character with blend-weights enabled it jitters between no simulation and simulation every tick.

Sort of like someone having a seizure.

I did previously submit my project to Sean from Epic staff regarding a Widget issue.
In this project it would be possible to see the behavior.

I attached a video demonstrating the issue

Hey Crocopede,

Thank you for reporting this issue. Would you have altered your project since the last file that you have sent me? I have deployed your project to a mobile device, and have played the game in the editor, and have not seen this error occur in the 4.5 preview build or our latest eternal build.

Thanks and have a great day!

Hi Sean.
Thanks for getting back.

I have altered other aspects of the game but nothing that is related to the skeletal mesh.

I tested on the version i supplied to you and the results are more subtle due to the blend weights.

In order to see it more clearly in the editor preview window please adjust the following

BallTest Blueprint.
Event Begin Play → Top section (Simulate Ragdoll levitation)

Change Set physics blend weight to 1.
Once you do this you should see it occur.

My exact build is
4.5.0-2316912

Please let me know if you can see the issue after adjusting the blend weight event.

Thanks. Have a great day

Hi.

I was wondering if you think it would be worth clearing all UE4 related files from my pc and do a fresh install?

That is why i am asking. It seems my 4.5 preview build is giving a lot of problems that keeps setting me back.

Is it possible that its my downloaded files that could have gone corrupt, or perhaps my project since porting it to 4.5?

Hey Crocopede,

I have done a bit of research with the Set Physics Blend Weight node and setting the Physics Blend Wright to a value of 1 will cause the character to be in a rag doll state. The closer the number is to 1, then the more rag doll the character will become. Hovering over the node in the graph produces this information:

As far as re-installing the Editor, the 4.5 preview is not a fully stable build. You will probably see numerous issues within the preview. The release of 4.5 should help fix with most of these issues. I would hold out until the 4.5 release and see if those issues still exist. If then do continue after the release, then I would go ahead and re-install.

Thanks and have a great day!

Hi Sean.
Thx.

Did you manage to see the jitter when rotating the player? Where it switches between rag doll and kinematic

Hi.

Strange that happens. Anyway… busy downloading. Internet here in Africa is a bit slow, so i will give feedback tomorrow morning once its done and let you know if the issue still occurs.

Thank you.

I was unable to get past the beginning of the level because the character would become aware of what was going on. We have just release version 4.5 of the Engine. Would you be able to try that out and see if the issue is still occurring?

I just did a quick test again. I noticed what happens now which is causing the major distortion is that the capsule is trying to push the physics asset out of itself.

Why it looks all mangled up. Because the character is inside the capsule but the capsule treats it as if its a separate entity.

I did make a test template but somehow already manage to corrupt it.
Will send you a version a bit later today.

Thank you

Hi.

I PM’ed you the new file. Its very basic. The character on the left is to demonstrate the newly introduced issue. Where the characters capsule now rejects physics assets.

If you do a Show Collision you will see that limbs are trying to escape the capsule.

The one on the right is to demonstrate the character reset back to a kinematic state before switching back to a simulate state.

Controls are non existent. If you touch or click the mouse the character will rotate.

You might want to delete either the left or right character based on which one you wish to focus on as i did not implement a possess function for the 2 characters.

Hi Crocopede,

Sorry about the lack of a response. I just saw the other post and I am now going to close this post. here is a link to the other post: Mobile : Phat / Character physics - World Creation - Unreal Engine Forums

Thanks and have a great day!

Hi Sean. No problems.
Its fine to close this one. I just want to confirm if it has been placed on the known bugs list or if you guys couldn’t replicate my issues with the capsule rejecting physics and also with the blend weights resetting on rotation.

Knowing its been placed on the list will make me sleep easy.
Cheers

Hi.
I would like to follow up and find out of Epic has added this to known bugs yet?
I published my game without any Phat assets but now i’m starting a new game.

And still the capsule rejects any physics assets making rag doll or other other physics assets unusable.

I would like to confirm if this is something that will be fixed or if it is not considered a bug or any status of the issue so that i can plan my next game accordingly and not spend time creating Phat objects if they are not working.

Thank you.

Hey Crocopede,

Sorry about the lack of response. I have gone ahead and written up Jira bug report UE-4882 so that it may be fixed in a future release.

Thanks and have a great day!
