UE4 Texture painting appears to be severely broken for me

As you can see from the video below, I’m getting all sorts of weird blocky issues going on. I’m just trying to paint a simple dirt path across grass. Something that I was able to do 10 years ago playing roller coaster tycoon with ease lol. Now it seems to be overly complicated.

Screenshots of it too -

Does anyone know what’s going on?

I should also note that I’m running UE4 - 4.4 on Windows 7 x64.

Tried editing the content example landscapes by adding more components and I just get more corruption.

Can any level designers please chime in on what’s going on?

Hi Vallamost,

Please try covering the entire landscape in a single material layer, then paint over that layer with your desired material layers. Please let me know if this solves the error.

Hi Vallamost,

We have not heard from you in quite some time. I am marking this as answered for tracking purposes. If you are still experiencing this error, please comment and let me know so we can continue attempting to fix this error. Thank you!

This error is still happening.

Any word on this? I’m experiencing the same thing still. Really frustrating – this system seems fundamentally broken. :frowning:

Hi . Yes, this seems to work, but it makes me unable to use my splatmap-generated terrain. The goal would be to create my splatmap layered terrain, then paint in any details I want to override. Is this possible? It seems to be either one or the other.

One thing I noticed too is layer stacking seems to matter. It only seems to work if I put all my alpha layers above my base grass layer. Is this a true observation?

Lastly, does “constant height” have any affect on these thing?

Thanks so much!

Hi AllenGingrich,

Did you try the fix that I recommended to Vallamost earlier in the thread?

Hi AllenGingrich,

Do you have a copy of your splatmap you would be comfortable sharing? I would be more than happy to take a look and see what might be occurring.

Sure, . I have my grass texture going to the green channel, rock to the red and to the blues. Thanks for the help by the way. Again, I just want to use this splatmap to make my landscape texture, then if I want to add a patch of texture somewhere, I want to be able to do that on top of this. Is that possible?

Do you have a heightmap that this was generated from as well? If not, what size landscape did you use for this splatmap?

I found landscape painting quite consuming, with shaders rebuilding and errors similar to the above I was put off, please can this be cleared up in some considerate training video, what type of errors to expect and workarounds etc.

Thanks in advance
