Are there any plans to make tutorial for advanced landscapes like Landscape Mountain demo?

Hello. I was wondering if you guys are planning to make a tutorial for creating advanced landscapes like the one in the Landscape Mountains tutorial.
Right now it’s pretty imposible to get a landscape look nice both from distance and from a closer look.
Thank you

Hi Tobias,

The advanced landscapes like the one you see in the Landscape Mountains Demo was made with a program named “World Machine.” There is a free to use version and a pro version.

There are tutorials for using this on YouTube. You can generate a heightmap and a splat map for import into UE4.

Thank you!

Tim

Hi Tim, thanks for the reply.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear enought, I was actually refering to the materials.
We use World Machine, it’s great for creating the mesh and assigning the base materials.
But the hard part is the creation of the landscape’s materials in Unreal. If we use basic materials the lanscape looks too basic (like Unity stuff), showing the texture tiles all over the place; and if we scale those materials, they just look bad when you’re closer to them.

The landscapes at the Demos look great both at distance and from a closer look. And all of this came from the material, blending from distances different things and other stuff.
But when we got into that materials, we noticed that it’s not easy task at all. Believe me, we’ve been watching A LOT of Unreal material tutorials but we couln’t get that figured out.

Thank you

Ah, I can understand the need for wanting that specifically. Materials are definitely a beast all their own!

I’ve reached out to our documentation team to see if there are any plans to do something like this in the future. I’ll get back to you once I have a more definitive answer.

Thank you!

Tim

Thanks for that Tim

It would be great for us and probably for a lot of other dev teams as well.
Unreal’s material editor is such a powerful tool but it sometimes gets too difficult to handle.

Cheers!

Tobias

I’ve just gotten a reply back from our Docs team. There are plans to make a tutorial, but no specified timeline for release.

Some of the topics to be covered are (This is just a short list):

  • Exporting and Importing your Heightmap from WM
  • Setting up your Landscape Materials
  • Landscape Layer masks
  • Landscape Section LOD
  • Tip & Tricks

From what I gather the tips and tricks section would be more where you would want to see things, correct? I know this is the section I would be more particularly interested in myself.

Do you have any specific things you’d like to see or examples? I can pass this along to our docs team as a suggestions for the tutorials.

Tim

Thanks Tim, that sounds great

Sure, all topics in the list sound good. A step by step would be great and it looks to be one like that.

I think the “Landscape Section LOD” is what we need, if that’s related with the materials. I mean, I think what they’re doing is blending materials according to distance so they look well both from a closer look and from far away.

Both the LandscapeMountains and VehicleGame demos are great examples of this.

Thanks again!

Tobias

And yes, probably the “Tip & Tricks” will be very helpfull as well
