High resolution screenshot

Hi Everyone,

The high resolution screenshot is outputting corrupted files, also it sometimes crashes the editor.

Kind Regards,
ShadowKind Games

Are you using the highresshot command? Also what kind of corrupted file are you getting?

If it is just plain black try opening the images with another viewer, i was having that problem with Irfanview the last time i checked.

I noticed the same thing using the high res screenshot gui. Using the command “HighResShot 2” instead of the gui seems to work though.

Nice thanks for the tip… Seems it’s the GUI.

Thank you for posting this issue. We’ve confirmed the issue and have submitted a bug in our database for tracking.

Please continue to use DRungelrath’s and Jacky’s work-around for now and let us know if you encounter additional issues.

Thanks,

I just wanted to say that I’m still experiencing this in v.4.0.2. Has this been fixed in 4.1?

Yes, it works in 4.1.1.

I believe this is still an issue in 4.2. Whenever i try to open a bmp in GIMP made with either highresshot 2 or highresshot 1920x1680 it tells me that it is an unrecognized or in valid MBP compression format, and the editor is unable to import the image either.

Howdy Akuthia,

I am a little confused as to what you exactly is causing the issue for you? Are you saying that any 1920x1620 image imported into the editor is causing a crash for you? Also, do you mind sharing the image that is causing this issue so that I may attempt to reproduce exactly what you are seeing?

Thanks and have a great day!

You can open the image with Paint and then resave for now.

I am having the same problem as Akuthia with 4.5 Preview. I try to take Screenshots in the Editor to create Icons for my items. When I use the “HighResShot”-Command (The size does not matter) the file I get can not be opened with Gimp. I can’t tell you the exact message since I use the german version of Gimp, but it is along the lines of "\Filepath\Filename.bmp could not be opened: Unknown or invalid BMP-Compressionformat (Sorry for translation-mistakes). The windows photo-view opens it without problems. I don’t know about other programms. Since I usually only use Gimp and can’t afford Photoshop, this problem is very annoying.

This is one of the HIghResShots. But as I said: It happens with all of them.

Howdy HammelGammel,

Thank you for reporting this issue. I have been able to recreate the error that you were running into. Unfortunately, this would not be a UE4 error. This is a Gimp error that is not allowing the screenshot to open. You can currently use paint, as Jacky has stated, as a workaround for your screenshot for the time being. You may want to contact Gimp, as well, and report this issue. Here is a link to the location of where you can fill out a bug report: GIMP - Bugs

Thanks and have a great day!

Hi Sean

Is there any chance that you guys take another look at this issue? I am having problems opening the High Resoultion Screenhots in IrfanView as well. It’s not just GIMP that can’t open UE4 generated .bmp files, so there must be something that can be done in this matter.

Howdy rimau,

Thank you for the additional information on the thread. I have just tested this issue once again and i was able to open a bmp file on GIMP without any errors. I also changed the file type to jpeg, png, and then back to bmp, and still ran into no errors. I was testing this on Preview 7 of build 4.7.

Let me know if there would be any additional information they may help to recreate this issue. What version of the Engine would you be using to test this issue?

Thanks!

Hi Sean

Thanks for checking things out. Right now we are using the 4.6.1. We will probably get the 4.7 release as soon as it’s available, so we will test it out for sure.

Thanks again and have a nice day

Sounds great rimau. Be sure to let me know if the issue persists in the 4.7 release when it has been made public.

Thanks and have a great day!

Hi

I did forget about this one for a while, but… I have just tested it with 4.7.6 and it’s still the same. The .bmp file is not recognized both by GIPM and IrfanView. If the 4.7 Preview was working just fine in that matter than either it’s back or this behaviour is not consistent on different systems.

Hi Rimau,

Thank you for the update on the issue. Would you be able to share the file that is giving you issue currently? If you do not wish to share publicly, you can send me a private message via the Unreal Forums. Here is a link to my page: https://forums.unrealengine.com/member.php?4890-Sean-Gribbin

Thanks!

Hi

I have attached 4 files that are giving me problems. Saved with HighResShot command with target resolution specified.

My system is Win 8.1, auto updates. The GIMP version is 2.8.10 and IrfanView is 4.38.

I am experiencing the same problem with different UE4 projects so it is unlikely that it is project realted.

Howdy Rimau,

Thank you for sending over those screenshots. I have been able to test this issue and reproduce this issue internally. Unfortunately, This would not be an issue with UE4, but rather a GIMP issue. The file is opening correctly with other image programs, like Photoshop. You may want to reach out to Gimp and see if this issue can be resolved. Here is a link to their bugs page: GIMP - Bugs

You can also open the image in Paint and then save the file as a png file. This will allow Gimp to open the image so you can alter it as you wish. Though this is not the correct workflow, it does allow the image to be worked on.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thanks!
