would it be possible to pull the AO buffer for use as a mask in a material?

Without coding in a call to that buffer, you could use a scene capture actor with a Post Process Material tied to it to only render out the scene’s AO, however there is currently a bug that will not allow render targets to use blendables. We are working on correcting this issue and I will let you know as soon as we have a solution.
