Search help

After build, Unreal Editor closes after 10s

I have compiled source code on Windows 7 64bit just like in instructions. Now after launching UE4Editor and basic project with chairs and table, everything is working smoothly but after 5-10s editor closes/disappears without warning even when I do nothing.

What could it be?

Ok, so my project is named "First". When I set: UE4 Property Pages / Configuration Properties / Debugging / Command Arguments to First and hit F5 to debbug. Visual Studio gave me error message that it cant find C:\UnrealEngine\First\First.uproject and indeed it was not there.

So I search and find that Unreal Project Browser created "First" project in C:\Users\Michał\Documents\Unreal Projects\First. So I make folder and copied project to C:\UnrealEngine\First. And now everything is running without closing after 5s.

Also now I noticed that table and chairs are partly yellow instead just grey like earlier, so maybe it was something about materials...?

Hi Michael,

Can you give us the editor logs? You can find them in one of two locations depending on which build you have:

C:\Users\USER_NAME\AppData\Local\UnrealEngine\4.0\Saved\Logs C:\ProgramData\Epic\Engine\Saved\Logs

You should see a UE4.log file.

Hmm, something is issuing the CLOSE_SLATE_MAINFRAME command. Since you've compiled the code locally, do a quick search for CLOSE_SLATE_MAINFRAME, and add some breakpoints where it's being called. When the breakpoint is hit, we should gain some insight into why the editor is being asked to be closed!

OK, I don't know if I have done this correctly.

I found: GEngine->DeferredCommands.Add( TEXT("CLOSE_SLATE_MAINFRAME"));
command in MainFrameActions.cpp file.

I added red circle break point next to this line. And build and F5 run. (In Development Editor - mode)

When Unreal Editor launched I had got massive Output in VS2013. But when Unreal Editor crashed after 10s I had nothing more... Maybe i should build it in debug mode??

Yeah you're on the right path - though "Debug Editor" is the best configuration to run under to help diagnose these kinds of things.

Also you should have found CLOSE_SLATE_MAINFRAME in a few other spots,

Might be worth adding breakpoints there as well.

Ok, I set 6 breakpoints in multiple files and compiled in Debug Editor. Unreal Project Browser launches without problems. I open project with chairs and table.

Then I hit break point in UnrealEdMisc.cpp file. in line: GEngine->DeferredCommands.Add( TEXT("CLOSE_SLATE_MAINFRAME"));

I continue with F5,

I hit break point in EditorServer.cpp in line: else if( FParse::Command(&Str,TEXT("CLOSE_SLATE_MAINFRAME")) )

(I am still in Unreal Project Browser)

I hit F5, Visual Studio exit from debug mode and Unreal Editor is launching.

Then when Unreal Editor starts, after about 5s its closes.

I am not sure of which information I should be looking for...,

So after it hits the first breakpoint you can look at the Stack window to see which functions called your function. Take a look at that and you can copy and paste the stack into the thread to give us a better idea of what's causing this. Source access is awesome! :)

I am sending 2 attachments with breakpoints in UnrealEdMisc.cpp UnrealEdMisc.cpp and after that in EditorServer.cpp EditorServer.cpp. NickDarnell thanks for patience and help.

Ok - so in order to debug the real issue we need to skip the project browser and start the game project directly. That will stop Visual studio from disconnecting the debugger, and let us catch when the real 5s close is being issued!

You can right click on the UE4 project and click properties to get to this screen:

Looks like one of your modules is the wrong version. UE4Editor-Documentation.dll isn't registering as the right version. Bad build, not building everything correctly?

Relevant area of the log:
