Search help

  • Simple searches use one or more words. Separate the words with spaces (cat dog) to search cat,dog or both. Separate the words with plus signs (cat +dog) to search for items that may contain cat but must contain dog.
  • You can further refine your search on the search results page, where you can search by keywords, author, topic. These can be combined with each other. Examples
    • cat dog --matches anything with cat,dog or both
    • cat +dog --searches for cat +dog where dog is a mandatory term
    • cat -dog -- searches for cat excluding any result containing dog
    • [cats] —will restrict your search to results with topic named "cats"
    • [cats] [dogs] —will restrict your search to results with both topics, "cats", and "dogs"

Crash when attempting to launch 'Shooter Demo' project

Just as the editor is preparing to launch the cooked game, directly after compressing the reduced-quality lightmaps, the editor crashes and bumps back out to Windows. If I choose to copy the callstack, the only info I get is this:

 We apologize for the inconvenience.
Please send this crash report to help improve our software.

No word on what is causing it to fail, so it is entirely unclear whether it is a problem with UE4, some sort of software conflict on my system, or a hardware conflict of some description. To be fair, I'm currently running the editor below the stated requirements (4gb RAM instead of 8gb), but I cannot imagine that would cause anything other than slow compilation. The project runs absolutely fine if I choose to play inside the editor.

Hey Beaucephal,

Can you send us the log from your crash, and your machine specs? Thanks.

Hi Ben, the crash reporter did and does not give me the option to view any kind of crash log as stated above. All I can view is the callstack which gives me the placeholder text listed above.

Machine specs are as follows: Intel Core i3 2120 (4 logical cores) Nvidia GTX 650 Ti Boost (2gb RAM, GDDR5), 332.21 drivers 4gb DDR3 RAM Windows 7 sp1 64-bit

Got about 70gb free on the primary hard drive, so I cannot imagine I'm hitting any sort of virtual memory limitation either.

Thanks Beaucephal. You can find your log files in your project's folder (in your Documents) in Saved\Logs.

Didn't realize you could view your crashlog there, that's incredibly useful, thanks :)

The full crashlog from my last attempt to build is here:

As one last test, can you try deleting the Shooter Game project and redownloading / reinstalling? Thanks!

avatar image Beaucephal Mar 20 '14 at 11:22 PM

Following up on that and more poking around, the project builds and plays fine if I choose to play in-editor, as a separate window, or as a separate process, so my best guess is it must have something to do with how UE4 handles creating the final cooked build. Currently redownloading. Shall follow up as soon as I can. Cheers!

Did a clean-room reinstall of the editor and several sample projects. Mobile Temple, Reflections Subway and all the included templates build and launch with no errors, but the error in Shooter Demo persists.

Would you mind walking me through your process, step-by-step, for building and launching the level so I know I'm following you exactly? I did a simple Launch from the Toolbar, and did not run into a crash, but maybe I'm leaving out one of your steps.

Yep, that's exactly what I did. Simply opened the project through UE4's frontend program. Once the project had loaded, I hit 'Launch', at which point the editor spent roughly a half hour cooking the content before crashing. Absolutely no intermediate steps.
