Educational License : how can my university enforce it?

Hello,

I am pushing my university to pay for a license. I have read the FAQ thoroughly, and I understand the advantages.

What they ask me is the following : how can the university enforce that UE4 will only be installed on the university computers?

If they just share the UE4 account credentials (of course, you would need your student credential to access the UE4 credentials) then students can install it on their own PC, in violation of the.

If they don’t share it, it means that for every single machine, the IT guys need to install the software manually. It’s a bit of a hassle (there are thousands of computers, with different specs and OS. And a lot of them are laptops owned by departments, but loaned to students). I mean, it’s just so much hassle that they are not ready to do it.

Basically, they really don’t want the software to be installed illegally by students and they have to take responsibility even tough it’s not their fault.

Thank you for your answers

The intention would be to have the universities faculty purchase a subscription and install it on as many computers as they wish. Once installed, any other user can use that installation, however, they won’t be able to update to new versions or download other content. Only the faculty member(s) using their credentials could do that.

Long-term, we intend to have better team management tools that academic institutions (and other companies) would be able to use to make the management of this much easier.

Yeah they can install it on any computer the institution owns for 20 bucks. Honestly i woudnt worry about it too much if something goes wrong Epic would most likely go after the individual NOT the educational facility (i.e. if someone is using it to make games and money without paying royalties) to be honest though i woudnt see this happening as for the most part it would seem to me it would be used for student projects and the like :-).

What you should do is have the institution email epic sales support i think they may be able to further answer any questions or even provide a phone call. :-).
