MacBook Retina (GeForce 750M) / 16 GB RAM

Hello,
My main computer for development / cgi / design is the newest MacBook Pro .
I’ve Mavericks installed (10.9.2) and also Windows 8.1 while UE 4 runs with about 30fps in Medium Quality on Windows the same scene on OSX runs with 17 fps - since I want to use UE4 for iOS Development I can’t just build everything on windows. And despite that just compared (frostbite2, cryengine3) to other engines seems UE4 a little but slow right now,…

Don’t get me wrong I like the engine so far yet I’m curious if the engine gets further optimised… In that regard… Since at this point it’s very difficult to build a game with it.
I also figured that in both cases, when I use the Unreal Edit, the unreal engine app (blue icon) takes up to 10 fps. Closing it… Makes everything faster.

Thanks for feedback. We’re working on performance improvements and with time things should get much better. In fact, we may have a first patch that improves performance tomorrow. It won’t be the last, but I’m sure you’ll notice a difference.

As for the Unreal Engine Launcher slowing down the editor, I’ll look into this tomorrow. I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks - Sorry for my late answer!
I will test out the patch immediately… and let you know.

Thanks - Sorry for my late answer! I will test out the patch immediately… and let you know. – you can run OSX also in Full Retina Res 2880xXXX its the same like in 1440x900 (same performance)

Try this quick patch: http://cdn.unrealengine.com/qfe/QFE-FromCL-2027741-Shelve-2030638.zip

Also, try hiding the Unreal Engine Launcher. We’ve had reports that on some Macs it helps with the performance. I’ve been able to reproduce this, actually, so we will be working on a fix.

And, just in case, it appears that if you have your display mode set to higher than Best (Retina), it may affect the performance a lot too.

Sorry for suggesting to hide the Launcher. It’s you who found this helps, so you obviously know about this… I just copied this text from other thread. But yeah, I was able to reproduce, so hopefully it’ll get fixed soon.

Also, if you’re using non default display mode, try lowering it to Best (Retina).

Haha. We’ve been replying at the same time. OK, let me know if the patch improves things. Thanks!

Seems it runs fine

but after few minutes the Mac totally froze…
It seems the UnrealEdit fills up happily the RAM until its full and kills OSX.

Besides UnrealEdit runs from ~30fps to ~40fps (haven’t touched the scaleability settings though…) - But interesting is, when i scale up the screen (in its original res without HiDPI) and then scale up the edit window it totally slows down. So performance seems based also on viewport size. Not exactly resolution (or maybe both since the retina resolution scaling?!)

Yep! I have the new Macbook Pro Retina 16gbs ram also, and I confirm that the launcher will not even launch for me and it kills all my ram also… I have it for windows installed and its running fine, it’s just that when I run it in Win 8.1 the cpu heats up so fast.

You’re right, viewport size does make a big difference. We have some ideas on how to improve this, but did not investigate this thoroughly yet. I’ll keep you posted. For now I hope the performance is good enough for you to use the editor without too many problems.

But there’s this eating memory and freezing thing, which is a surprise  We did find and fix a memory leak in the Launcher itself (fix will be released very soon), but I didn’t have any reports about the editor filling up whole memory or freezing. I’ll look into this.

Okay! Thanks…
It’s still not snappy. But it should do it…

  • Is there a mobile emulation shortcut or iPhone 5/5S preset btw?
So i just see the mobile based graphics

This may be the same issue as here: https://answers.unrealengine.com/questions/13712/crash-hidinputinterface-macosx-109.html#answer-13800

Gosh* i haven’t seen it… Thanks!

Vasco, you can enable mobile emulation here: [drop down next to Play]->Mobile Preview.

Then click on Play.

I’m on a MBP Retina first Gen. At first I opened the animation content map and was only getting 10fps max, I read that turning down the Engine Scalability Settings down to Medium and Material quality to Low would help and it did by 5fps. I then closed out the Unreal launcher and got another 5fps. I then installed the patch on this page and got 10 more fps. I then set my Retina Display to Best instead of More Space and got another 10-15fps. I am now running at around 40-45fps on that map. Will keep testing and post back if anything changes.

Same here.
Technically is the first gen rMBP actually faster then the second gen.
the geforce 750m comes with less shader pipelines and smaller data bus but is from house similar clocked as apple did with the geforce 650m. The 650m on rMBP is pretty fast and comes with more shader units and better bus.

I had both (with mine the first gen geforce 650m died)

Awesome, didn’t know that. Well hopefully this rMBP last a while.
