What is the performance impact on using layered materials?

Hi,
I just wanted to ask this quick question out of curiosity, in the documentation for the layered materials its said that the usage of layered materials in game would have a performance issue for mobiles and stuff i was wondering if it would adversely affect PC and other plaforms (if i have a good rig of course, say 32GB ram, NVIDIA 660 and SSD and other stuff)… would it cause a serious problem when creating huge outdoor levels and stuff…

thank you…

Always use Layered Materials wisely. The desired result can almost always be achieved in other ways, with the use of masks and Lerps.

I keep seeing advice from the community to avoid using layered materials and suggest using lerps, etc.
This seems like common sense. Until you learn how it all works under the hood. Basically material Layers do all the lerping and blending for you, allowing you to have a much cleaner workflow.

Here’s proof!

This is the TV material from the Realistic Rendering demo:
104/80 instructions

And, here’s the exact same material using material layers.
105/81 instructions (And, if the mask amp were authored right, it would be the same without the need to invert two of the chanels)

Of course, layered materials allow artists to make more complex materials easier, and that’s definitely something to be mindful about.
