Can I release editor along with with game?

Ok. I already now I can release my own code, but can I pack editor along as well ? So other people can mod game, create blueprints for it, new levels etc ?

Hello,

Please take a look at the following from the FAQs as it should answer your question:

What kinds of products can I release under the Unreal Engine 4 subscription plan?

You can release any product that is allowed by law, with the exception of gambling applications and certain safety-critical control systems described in the EULA.

You can release games, demos, simulations, architectural showcases, etc.

The only parts of the Unreal Engine you can’t release to the general public are the source code and tools or modifications to them; these components may only be distributed to other licensees with access to the same version of the Unreal Engine.

Please let us know if you have additional questions.

Thanks,

In addition to what Wes has said, there are two paths you could go for supporting modders.

  1. Make your own simpler tool (feel free to use portions of the engine code) to make an editor designed to only make content for your game.

  2. Make a plugin! Our editor allows you to create “uplugins” that you could give out to users to include in their copy of our tools. So you say to potential map makers - go pay $19 to Epic, download their latest editor. Then install my uplugin and you can now make content for my game!

Thanks for answers guys!. Well 19$ doesn’t seem like big deal if someone is serious about modding game anyway. At worst one pizza less that week

The only way to ship an editor (or version of it) is through Epic channels. The easiest one is our GitHub network. So it’s permitted, just with restrictions.

This thread is pretty old but I couldn’t find a newer one dealing with this question - maybe things have changed since these answers.

We are developing a non-game simulation app and would like to do a variation on the editor and ship with our app. Is this allowed? Do I need a custom license? I have contacted Epic on the page to ask about custom license but have not heard back (a couple of weeks or more now). You guys were at GDC - so maybe that’s why I haven’t heard back.

Thanks for any response you can give me.
