Importing my DDS into Unreal Editor fails

My DDS file which was generated right from the latest Spacescape fails to import into Unreal despite being exported specifically for Unreal on my Mac. It should be a 2K Skybox. There are all kinds of tutorials available which point to this as a working tool. It’s worth noting that I also tried importing the images themselves into the ATI Cube Gen tool (PC) and that results in textures which cause the Unreal editor to hang entirely and need to be force-closed.

I’ve attached the one which should work – the editor only says it failed to create the asset.

Hi,

I’ve tried using your file and get the same results. However, if I use one of the default examples that is provided I have no issue importing into the engine. These files (depending on the size of the resolution) produce large files sizes that take a while to import and may appear as if the editor has frozen or is hanging up. For example, if I use the 512 option this file size is 24mb and takes about 3-4 minutes to import on my machine. If I use the 2k resolution the file size is 96mb and takes roughly 15-20 minutes to import. Depending on hardware spec this could take longer on other systems.

Since I am not able to open your file in SpaceScape since it only produces exports I cannot toy around and see if I can see anything different.

Try giving our docs a look and see if there is anything that may be relevant to your creation of the cubemap vs the sample ones that work that they provide.

Thanks!

Tim

Hi Tim, Did you do this process with HDR turned on in SpaceScape?

Thanks.

Hi,
Maybe this is a bit old, but, I got the same issue trying to import a DDS cube map image generated from SpaceScape into Unreal Engine Mac editor. Since NVIDIA Tools are only available for Windows, I managed to open the DDS image in GIMP and export it again as a DDS image, selecting RGBA8 as Format, and deselecting “Generate mipmaps”. The import process took a couple minutes in UE, but it worked just fine.

Cheers!

Worked for me.
