I have actually experienced this before as well and the good news is, it is fixable. Follow the steps provided to get your project to open again. If at any point you went into your project settings and changed the project name associated with the project id, or if you accidentally changed the project id, this can cause this issue to occur.
Steps to follow:
- Be sure you do not have any projects currently open
- Go into your ‘Unreal Projects’ folder (located in My Documents by default)
- Find the project folder you are having problems with and open that folder
- There will be a folder named ‘Config’
- Open up this folder and find the file named ‘DefaultEngine.ini’
- This will open up a Notepad file by default.
- At the top of this file you will see a place where you can set the game name.
- Here is where the instructions might vary, you either need to clear out your game name entirely or you need to change the current name to match the correct name of the original project.
- If neither of these work, copy your entire project. Go into the same file, and change the name to something unique.
