Projects on previous versions

Hi, I recently had a post about issues working the newer versions of unreal I get a graphics card stopped working on any version past 4.2.1. So I’ve carried on working with 4.2.1 and planning on getting a new system in the future. If I get far into a project using 4.2.2 and in a few months get a system and start using the new versions. Will I get many issues? Or should I wait until I upgrade.
Thanks
Scott

Hi, thanks for the reply. My problem is I can’t run any version after 4.2.1 I’ve tried each one and get the same error on my previous question they couldn’t figure out the issue and just put it down to an out dated laptop although it still runs games etc med-high graphics. So with what you said you suggest just waiting for a computer upgrade instead of working on 4.2.1 and changing version in the future when I upgrade my laptop

Hi Scrottc91,

It’s common practice with UE4 game developers to stay on the same version of the engine until a needed or fix is implemented in a later version. Only then will they upgrade and the time to repair any issues that may arise will be scheduled.

Anytime you upgrade your project to a newer version of the editor there is a chance of things breaking. To minimize this as much as possible make sure you upgrade to each version of the editor. Don’t upgrade from 4.2.2 directly to 4.6.0, this will definitely cause problems. The best practice is to upgrade like this: 4.3.1 > 4.4.3 > 4.5.1 > 4.6.0 It’s time consuming but your project will have less features break this way.

Also, make sure to look through the release notes for each version of the editor before you upgrade. This way, you will have an idea if a major change has happened to features in your game and you can plan the time needed to repair them.

Just search for the version and release notes on our Documentation site.

I hope that helps.

No, if you can run 4.2.1 on your current setup then by all means continue working on your project. Then later on when you get the new system, make sure the newer versions of UE4 runs correctly (they should if you build/purchase your system with UE4 specs in mind). Then update your project at that time.

Can you please attach your DxDiag so we can have a look at your hardware specs? With that info we can let you know what is limiting you to the earlier version. Thanks!

Here is Scottc91’s previous post he mentioned. It has his dxdiag posted as well.
