Setting up mesh for Animation Starter Pack

Hi, everyone. I’d imagine this situation is somewhat common but I can’t seem to find out what to do. I’ve made a mesh in Maya 2015 without a skeleton and I’ve imported the Hero skeleton from UE4 that’s used in the Animation Starter Pack. I don’t know what to do from here. I’m definitely not too far beyond what you’d call a beginner.

I have not combined this skeleton with the mesh nor do I know how. One concern is that the controllers apparently don’t import, and every tutorial on this subject seems to add them before attaching parts of the mesh to the skeleton. I could look up how to creäte controllers but I wouldn’t know which ones are to be used with this skeleton.

But maybe animation retargeting would eliminate the need for them? I don’t really know just what they do.

I’m coming to the conclusion that rigging controllers aren’t actually necessary but simply make an animator’s life a fair bit easier, which would mean that as I’m hoping to use the Animation Starter Pack for now I wouldn’t really need to do the controllers in fact. Can someone confirm this? Thank you.
