Media Framework Alpha

Hi guys, I’m trying to work some green screened actors into a scene using the new Media Framework. I’ve got one movie that serves as my base image and a second that only contains the alpha matte. I thought it would be a simple process of dropping the alpha textures into the composting slot, but it doesn’t seem to be producing any results. Does anyone know if this is working/how to do this?

Thanks!

Hi pixelvspixel,

This isn’t currently possible with the Media Framework. We do hope to have improvements on this feature in the future but at the moment it is used to only play pre-rendered video in the editor.

Thanks,

TJ

Hey TJ thanks for jumping in on this. I spent the night googling and search in keyword possible but couldn’t find much info on the subject. The documentation for the feature obviously has holes in it.

So I did try just activating the Alpha through a material node, and it “works”, but there are some issues for sure. The biggest is the two files don’t start at the same time. I found a few ideas - people around the net suggested for using blueprints to start the two separate media players. But I haven’t tried those out yet, it’s on my to-do list this afternoon.
What I’ve been try to also deal with is figuring out how much video I can actually use in a presentation on the rift. Kite and Lightning’s Senza Peso features about 4 green screened actors and was built in Unreal. So I know it’s possible.

Video is a tricky subject. There are so many variables that could impact performance. So I’m not even sure if someone at Epic could help suggest any settings that have worked well for others? What is the best frame rate, should I compress more and try and load to memory vs streaming? Is that a cap for running time? I could go on and on, but yeah…

I tried the green screen actor in a blank scene and it was still creating odd spikes in my FPS that would cause dips below 75fps. I would guess that the alpha is probably a massive killer, but again. I’m shooting in the dark here.

Thanks again.

I’m glad you got something working. Since it’s still in the Alpha stage it does have some limitations at the moment. I will see if I can get you some more info on it. I’ll post back as soon as I have something.

Thanks again TJ, I’d love to hear any of that info. I’ll be sure to post my findings as well, as the community needs some more insight in this area. I’m going to try and email Kite and Lighting as well and see if anyone over there would be kind enough to share any findings.

I’m sorry it’s been a while since I’ve replied, but here is a good place to find more info. Gmpreussner is the dev that created this feature and he actively engages in the thread.

Any news on this topic? I am running into the same problem at the moment and it would be nice to have at least some “little” option to start two video textures at the same time. I have to use an alpha channel, getting stuck now. I found some BP workaround…but i need to apologize, i am not a programmer - can’t even create the proper nodes there.
