4.7 - Foliage back from the dead

Hi

I’ve only had a little time to spend with the 4.7 preview 1, my main interest was to see the performance benefits of the foliage improvements, however I’ve seen a few issues.

Initially the frame rate, within the editor and when running, were terrible compared to running foliage focused content in 4.6. Less than 1fps (in editor) for one of my levels!

I initially assumed this was something to do with using SpeedTree assets with the foliage system, given others have posted impressive looking framerates in other static mesh experiments.

However, I’ve now realised that previously deleted (using SHIFT-CTRL) foliage instances have respawned in 4.7. So I went back to a level in 4.6, made some changes (including accidentally placing around 10 trees on nearly the same spot, then deleting them again), then tried the level in 4.7, and surprise surprise the bundle of 10 or so trees is back! So logically I assume the trees are being stored and flagged as deleted? But such is not being honoured in 4.7?

This makes comparing performance between builds 4.6 & 4.7 especially tricky.

Currently performance in the editor seems much slower than 4.6, when foliage lighting hasn’t yet been built, but again this could be a symptom of the issue described above.

Hi Gavin1969,

Does this occur on a blank project with no additional content? For instance, if you create a project in 4.6 with no additional content, place foliage into the level then erase it. Finally save and migrate the project to 4.7 and see if that foliage returns. Does this occur?

Good news for me (at least for all the levels I’ve already built!) is that YES it happens with a blank project created in 4.6 then upgraded.
So it’s not a project specific issue.

A couple of screen shots to go with my last reply.

Hi Gavin1969,

Thank you for the additional information. I was able to reproduce this and have entered a bug report, UE-7008 to be assessed by the development staff.
