Unreal Engine 4 keeps crashing (Mac)

Hi there,

I recently got an educational version of UE4 and was excited to try it and I have. I’ve been doing some tutorials, however I’ve been running into multiple problems with UE4 crashing.

This often happens when I try to browse for a new project file upon launching UE4. Immediately when I begin looking for files, it freezes, a crash reporter comes up and then it subsequently crashes. I was able to solve this by opening a project while another project is already open, but still this is a decent problem.

However, my biggest issue right now is that when, UE4 (Version 4.4.3) crashes as soon as I try to put certain models into a level. I’ve tried other models and some of them won’t crash it but others will. I don’t know why though, UE4 was supposedly built to handle these sorts of things and my computer should be up to snuff. UE4 does also take an unreasonable amount of resources to run though. Does it have a 64 bit setting or something that will make it less tempermental or let me allocate more RAM to it?

My computer is a 2014 Retina Macbook Pro running OSX Maverick (Version 10.9.5). It has a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GBs of RAM, and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB graphics card. It should be able to handle it, right? Are there any bugs common in Mac version? Any tips for better optimization?

Sorry if this sounds basic. I’m very new to Unreal Engine 4 and have been previously been using Unity.

Hey SuperSparkplug,

In general, we recommend using Yosemite (10.10.1) and version 4.6.1 on Mac. Here are some details as to why:

I’m not certain what’s causing crashes, however. Next time you crash, can you attach your crash log? You can find information about how to report bugs and crashes here:

Thanks!

That thread mentioned a performance boost on Yosemite. Does this mean it won’t make my Mac have a heart attack every time I run Unreal? It basically does that whenever I open UE4 and takes an absurd amount of CPU power.

It’s possible, but without knowing what’s causing crashes specifically I couldn’t be sure. It’s certainly worth a shot.

Hi SuperSparkPlug,

We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’m marking this post resolved for tracking purposes. If you’re still experiencing frequent crashes, please try updating to Yosemite 10.10.1 and UE4 version 4.6.1. If that does not help, please and attach crash logs for your project. Thanks!

Hi Silverleaf1,

This sounds like a different issue to me. Please open a new post with these details and we’ll begin investigating. Thanks!

Hi, I’m experiencing very frequent crashes on Mac and I saw this thread so I though I’d add to it.

I am on Yosemite 10.10.1 and UE4 version 4.6.1.
I’ve been sending crash logs each time it crashes.

crashes often happen if I minimize editor and tab away from it to another app or to Safari where I’m watching UE4 tutorials. As soon as I try to unminimized, it crashes. Other times, it just crashes when I open up one of tools like, then click back to main editor window.
In general, when things are working, editor runs glassy for me on my Mac. Good performance and framerate. It just spontaneously crashes for some reason. Usually crash logs say some things about it was trying to do some core UI rendering or whatever.

My system:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro11,3
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 16 GB

I’m getting probably 1 crash every hour or less.

Any ideas what I might try for more stability?

Thanks.
