I’ve had a recurring problem with UE4. It refuses to let me name or rename any of the assets I import or create. It keeps saying it can’t make its file path more than 165 long (it’s nowhere near to that) and then just names it a longer name when I give up on renaming it. I don’t understand why it’s doing this.
Make sure you file path (ie. C:\Users[Your Computer Name]\Documents\Unreal Projects[YourProjectFolder]\Content[Any Other Folders Created in this folder]) is shorter than 165 characters. The default will always supersede this. If you have a lot of folders in your content inside other folders this could cause the renaming issue you’re seeing.
I just said the filepath length is nowhere near that. That doesn’t explain how it the system auto-naming it to NewMaterial2 is longer than just naming something by a single letter.
Looks like we have a report (UE-1332) in for this, especially with character limits below the 165 threshold.
Currently it is “backlogged.” I’ve added your post here to the report so that when a fix has been submitted and verified fixed I can update you. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause in the mean time.
