UE4 4.6.1 Runs Sluggish on Mac OSX

Hello,

So, using Unreal Engine 4.6.1 Editor I noticed that the framerate is very slow, about 1-3 FPS, 5 at best.

Model Name: iMac Model Identifier: Mac12,2; Processor Name: Intel Core i5; Processor Speed: 2.7 GHz; Number of Processors: 1; Total Number of Cores: 4; L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB; L3 Cache: 6 MB; Memory: 8 GB

I am not running any other application that might interfere in the background.

I also checked the FPS on other projects, the results are as follows: SciFiHallway (Sample): 1-3 FPS, Minimal_Default: 10 FPS or less, Nothing in project at all: 25 FPS or less

I tested my graphics card using benchmarking applications and it seems that it is working properly.
I reinstalled the engine entirely, and that didn’t help at all.
I also tried it on my MacBookAir which has 1.30 GHz and 4.00 GB of RAM, and has higher FPS.

I tried exporting the project Minimal_Default and it seemed to run faster.

Also: I tried playing around with the editor and changed the resolution.
At normal display resolution, it ran at 1-5 FPS and at 720p resolution, it ran about 30-45 FPS. The thing is, if I detach the viewport from the editor, then maximize the editor, the FPS drops back down to 1-5.

Thanks

Hi Nixite,

There’s nothing from the specs you have listed that should cause the editor to run that slow. One cause may be if you have the editor running in the background and an open window like Persona in the foreground as your GPU has to render both full contents simultaneously. However, even if this were the case most people report dropping down to 30fps from 60fps -not 1-5fps.

We’ll have to investigate a little further to find out what’s causing the issue. Please provide as much information as possible: ie Does this happen with an empty project, sample project, etc. Are you running a lot, if any programs in the background?

Also, please provide the following information:

Apple menu >About This Mac>More Info> Add the information from this window (serial # not necessary).

The “System Report:” Apple menu >About This Mac>More Info> System Report>Hardware (All information listed in the “Hardware Overview.”)

Thanks

Opening the ActivityMonitor might give you some idea about where power / time is going. You should look at both CPU usage and memory use to start with.

These are all the things in the Hardware Section of System Report (with the exception of serial number.)

Also, what might be my expected FPS for the specs I have?

Hi Nixite,

A spoke with a developer and he did not seem to see any obvious problems with your system that would cause it to run UE4 so slow.

This model has an AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics processor with 512 MB of dedicated GDDR5 memory (Which runs Open GL version 4.10) and that is to spec to run UE4. -So you should expect to run at a minimum around 30FPS in general.

You may want to run a test to make sure your graphics card is functioning properly.

Also, you may want to create a copy of your projects folder (and move it someplace safe.) Then reinstall the engine.

If possible, if you have access to a similar model, test the engine on that.

Alright, thanks for the support.
