UE4 crashes when placing a model from the content browser

Hi,

It had been fine until I moved some contents from one folder to another, moved total three folders and then deleted those empty folders. I kinda remember it said “reference something…” in a dialog window before hitting the delete button, but didn’t think it was important. When I tried opening the level next time I got some errors of those model and they weren’t in the level so I moved those folders back to the original spot and the level opens fine now. However, I can’t drag drop another new model this time and it keeps crashing. I can’t even save the level. It occurs every time I try placing a model.

BTW, how can I upload dmp file?

Hi Sailors,

Apologies for the delay.

You can upload the DMP file here in a zip file. Can you also include the call stack when the crash happens? Just copy that text and past into a txt file.

Obviously this crash is only happening with this project correct? You’re not able to reproduce this behavior in a blank project?

References are an important thing and can cause issues like this to happen. You can try cleaning the project by right clicking on the folders in question and click “Fix Up Redirectors in Folder.” When content is moved there are small redirector files that are left as a reference to where these objects are now located. When you deleted the folders these redirectors were wiped as well. This is why it worked when you replaced them.

Couple of things to try:

  • Try the “Fix up redirectors in folder” option and see if this works
  • Try migrating your content folder to a new project using the “migrate” option and see if the crash is still happening.

Hi Tim,

Thank you for your replay. Well, I have been working on this project for more than a month and created another level with my original FBX so I have the problematic level and a new one in the same project. I re-imported those that had issues before and the new level is working fine now. I will never move models around from now on. I am at this point really paranoid to try fixing redirections or mess those folder around in case it may affect my new level. I just can’t afford losing it again so will continue on and try finishing this project. If you find more info please let me know.
