Demo Reel Material

I am not sure if this particular question as been asked or stated. Basically can I use UE4 as a render software like Keyshot or Marmoset without repercussions?

I am a 3D character artist and I modeled a character and want to have it on my demo reel. I have a basic animation sequence and a quick turntable scene. Could I render/produce a video in/with UE4, export it and then use it in a demo reel to demonstrate my modeling, texturing and animation skills. Would I need to pay for that video/render data; to use on a demo reel I post to Vimeo and submit the link for positions that I wish to be hired for?

I understand all this can be accomplished with Maya and other software but having actual render data in a game engine I think says a lot more about my understand of a pipeline and workflow than it would say if I only had Maya renders and some Marmoset Beauty Shots. Odd question, I understand if this gets blocked or deleted.

Hi djwiley912,

Good news, you would not owe royalties on any of what you have described for two reasons:

  1. You are not selling a product and thus have no profits for us to receive royalties from.

  2. Even if you sold your demo reels, videos and images are forms of non-interactive “linear” media. Linear media is not subject to royalties as per our EULA: Game-Engine-Technologie von Unreal - Unreal Engine

“[…]no royalty is owed on the following forms of revenue:[…]Revenue from non-interactive linear media which is Distributed in a form that does not contain or, in order to deliver, rely on servers running the Licensed Technology (e.g., broadcast or most streamed video files, cartoons, or movies);”

Let me know if that helps you or if you have any other questions.

Cheers!
