Weird edges on screen when using Depth of Field?

I’m noticing some weird edges on the screen when using the Depth of Field effect. This only happens when using the Gaussian method. I attached a screenshot of this, and it happens on any project with any map.

As you can see, there is a distinct black edge on the right and some lesser shading on the bottom.

How can I prevent this from happening?

Hey Giovannini -

I am trying to reproduce this DOF issue for you and haven’t been successful so far, can you post a screenshot of your DOF Post Process settings? Also are you using a Post Process Volume or are you a assigning the settings to the player’s camera directly? Also do you have it functioning in a toggle basis, meaning do you have a volume you walk into or a function in a blueprint that turns on and off?

Thank You

Eric Ketchum

The DOF settings don’t seem to be the issue, as I’ve tried messing around with all of the values and the same issue occurs. However, I did find out that this problem only occurs when using Temporal AA as the AA method. If I switch to FXAA, it works perfectly fine.

I am also using a Post Process Volume (Global Post Process in the first person template level).

Hey Giovannini -

I have no doubt that it is a result of something in Temporal AA but I wanted your DOF settings because the settings I have been trying to use have been unsuccessful in reproducing the issue internally which I will need to present to our engineers for their investigation into a solution.

Thank You

Hi Giovannini,

We have not heard back from you in a few days, so we are marking this post as Resolved for tracking purposes. If you are still experiencing the issue you reported, please respond to this message with the additional information requested above and we will offer further assistance.

Thank you.

I have the same problem with GaussianDOF. My settings:

Focal Distance: 500

Focal Region: 450

Near Transition: 10000

Far Transition: 1000

The rest is on default values. I’ve observed that changing Focal Distance to almost max values blurs this black line on the right. Just like in @Giovannini case, it occurs only when TemporalAA is enabled.

Update: It seems to be dependent on window resolution/size! When I play in Standalone or separate editor window with 1920x1080 resolution, the black line disappears and everything is ok. Probably it’s because aspect ratio, because when I set it to e.g. 800x600, the black line is there.

HI Slavq -

Awesome job with identifying what is probably the issue. I will run test internally to confirm and if so will enter a bug report and post the reference number here.

Thank You
