Using Smooth tool on my terrain causing spikes

Im been editing my terrain in UE4 for sometime now,and I think originally I imported it from Unity, got no errors, and no issues until recently.

I am using smooth tool, set to strength of .1 atm mainly because I was told if values are too high it can cause what I am seeing, which are spikes , reproducible only it seems, using the smooth tool.

It only does it, atm anyway, when the smooth tool slides over the ‘edge’ of an area, which is between flat terrain, and hilly terrain, and it happens all the time under those curcumstances.

I was told on ue4 forum that it is a bug, but a individual who was helping me try to fix it, is using 4.7 and doesn’t seem to have the issue, and Im using 4.4.3.

Was this a bug in 4.4.3 tools and if so is it fixable ?

thx

Hi neighborlee,

I haven’t been able to reproduce the spike effects that you mention in 4.4.3. Can you be more specific as to what settings you are using. Smoorth too with a strength of .1, what is the brush falloff and brush size. Additionally are you using a circle brush or a different style of brush. What is the style of falloff you are using?

Smooth tool strength is .85, falloff is zero brush size is 1788.155884 , circle brush and style of falloff is smooth.

thx for any help you can offer on this, its not a deal breaker buts its impeding progress a bit.

I had someone PM me from forum, with a landscape < I’ve been getting some forum help but alas no fixes yet> r16 format they are asking me to try out,and if it fixes it I’ll let you know.

OK WEIRD, I think I fixed it!!

EDIT EDIT EDIT: I unchecked ‘detail smooth’ under ‘tool settings’ on of course smooth tool, and no more spikes…

Maybe this is something that should be investigated and verified in most current versions of UE4.

Has anyone figured this out for 4.9.2 because ive done everything possible and still cant fix it.

Hi , did you try the suggestions that neighborlee mentioned below? This seemed to resolve his error. If it does not resolve the error that you are seeing, please let me know.
