What happened to the dynamic GI?

I read that epic dropped the SVOGI and later integrated LPV from lionhead studios.

From whatever I can google all posts are dated to summer 2014 and all of them says it was a WIP that time requiring changes in ini files etc.

So as of asking this in 2015 january its almost an year since that feature was WIP. So is the dynamic global illumination now available ? if yes then how do i use it?

I am using Unreal engine 4.6 built from source and if you make a movable light then all shadows are completely black like in UE3

I think it is available in your version (4.6), just enable it by adding the following to you ConsoleVariables.ini file:

r.LightPropagationVolume = 1

For more info about LPV just check the docs.

Dynamic Global Illumination is something that is being actively developed right now. While LPV is no where near production ready and contains some known issues.

You may also want to take a look at Dynamic GI using Distance Fields that Daniel has posted about here: Global Illumination alternatives - Feedback & Requests - Epic Developer Community Forums

The Distance Fields GI is being more actively developed though since this is a feature being looked at for Epic’s Fortnite.

Both of these are still not production ready, but dynamic GI is being worked on.

Although they do take some shortcuts, Dynamic GI has been in CryEngine for a while now. Why can’t a similar solution be used for UE4? Will the dynamic GI that is being developed be fast enough for PS4 and Xbox One? It would be great to eliminate the need for lightmaps entirely. Any idea when development will be finished?

No definite timeframe for completion, but again, it’s being actively developed and will be on part with the development speed of distance field soft shadows and ambient occlusion if I had to offer a guess.

Too bad! GI was the flag ship feature UE4 was going to release with, also death of SVOGI was a blow, but that was explained

It’s coming. The engine is still being actively developed and there are always features being refined and added. It’s not a lost cause. I’m excited for the features as well.

Hello Epic team! I would love to know about the current development status since we’re looking forward to use dynamic GI in our next game.

The current version we’re using runs pretty well for an in-development system, we just run into issues when running builds on notebook rigs with mobile Nvidia GPU.

Thank you for your time.

Two years later…

Well, here we are. I see no problem to use VXGI but we need some documentation. Will it work on “all” modern GPU’s from NVidia “and” AMD? Aside this it must work with VR (90+ fps to match Oculus requirements). Maybe, just a little update would be fine to know how things proceed. I know i’m driving a hard bargain here but i think it’s important for a lot of developers.

I should mention that we can’t use directional sunlight solutions since our game is playing inside asteroids and less lightbake since our game starts to get dynamic changing environment.
Indeed, looking for some “rock-solid” solution.
