Crash on Editor Load after modifying parent blueprint

We have a character blueprint that is the parent of several inheriting blueprints. When I modify even simple logic in this blueprint (not even data – just, for instance, adding a branch and a print), it compiles fine and runs fine, but if I close the editor and reopen it, the editor crashes on loading the project.

I am getting another crash on editor load now. I have about 50 files checked out with work in progress. A crash while I was using the editor seems to have corrupted something and now I can’t load the editor without crashing. I may have to redo all my work.

I kept getting this crash even after I SHELVED all my work in progress files and deleted all the intermediate code files, regenerated project files and rebuilt the editor from Visual Studio. In the end I had to delete all my work in progress, nuke my depot and redownload the whole project and rebuild from scratch. Today I’ll be redoing all the work I did yesterday afternoon.

I wish this editor was ready for production.

Have you experienced this error since starting your work over?

I’ve submitted your crash as JIRA UE-10149 in our tracking software. Our devs will be investigating the issue further and we will post an update here when we have something.

The crash that corrupted the data was a one-off; I’m not sure what the repro was for that. The crash on editor load happened subsequent to the crash that killed the editor, so I imagine the original crash corrupted data unrecoverably.

As for the crash earlier up this thread (the original one), it seems that when I saved a blueprint that contained a cast in it to a particular class of object, it would corrupt data and the editor would not reload on subsequent tries until I had reverted that blueprint. I could trigger this by casting to that class in one type of blueprint, or just by storing a reference to that type of class in a different struct blueprint.

A programmer went through this today and it looks like it might be because of this setup:

  • Parent character BP class has BP nodes that Get Controller and then cast to the Player Controller BP class for our project.
  • Player Controller BP class has a list of structs on it.
  • Each struct has a Character subclass reference on it (to the class, not to an object), plus a string.
  • The list is used to show you a text list of characters you can spawn as.

Adding a cast of the controller to the controller BP class within the character seems to create some kind of problem to do with circularity while de-serializing variables in the list of structs. Does this sound like a likely problem to you?

If so, it would be great if the editor could catch this circularity and refuse to compile the script with it. Also, it would be better if it cleanly failed to compile rather than crashing on editor load, obviously.

We implemented a fix based on all of the crash report data you submitted. We believe the issue has been corrected for us internally, however since we weren’t able to get a repro of the original issue we aren’t able to test the fix to be sure.

Do you still have a project that contains this error? If so, could you make a stripped down version of it and post a link to download it?
