I was greatly anticipating using UE4. I just can't because I'm on OSX

There were server incident.

These past week I had contemplated and skimmed through the models/shaders/textures available on UE4 to switch on board and take the subscription.

Today UE4 has gone free and I’m really glad I didn’t: I’m part of the 40% of Mac users who simply can’t use Unreal Engine 4 has it not compatible with OSX versions prior to 10.9.2.

Mavericks being way too unstable, and Yosemite basically ruining all 3+ y.o. devices performances, I simply cannot use Unreal Engine.

I’m really not a fan of Unity, especially their costly plan and renderer, but I have no choice and am disappointed not be able to try Unreal Engine 4 for VR and mobile apps…

Do you realize you posted this three times…?

It happens by accident

Yup, there were server incidents

Unfortunately UE4 would be severely compromised on Mountain Lion & earlier as it would have to run the simpler, mobile-focused forward renderer on many Macs and we don’t support that for running the UE4 Editor.

Mavericks version 10.9.2 was the first version of OS X that provided working support for several crucial OpenGL rendering features that are required by UE4’s deferred renderer which is needed to run the Editor. Consequently this is the minimum version of OS X we can support across all Macs. OpenGL bug fixes & performance improvements are also why we strongly recommend Yosemite (10.10) as it offers significantly improved performance over Mavericks.

Hmm…thanks for the answer.

But as I stated, Yosemite unfortunately destroys lots if not most older Macs.

So I guess I can’t use UE4.

While I don’t have an answer to making UE4 work on Mountain Lion, I am curious as to why Yosemite would be a problem, does your Mac meet the Editor’s recommended requirements:

Processor Quad-core Intel processor, 2.5 GHz or faster
Memory 8 GB RAM
Video Card NVIDIA GeForce 470 GTX or AMD Radeon 6870 HD series or higher

Less powerful Macs will provide a proportionally less capable/satisfactory experience & that wouldn’t be any better on Mountain Lion.
