4.7 adding point light causes massive fps drop

Hi,

I have a similar problem to GreenWolf, except I dont use LPV:

After migrating the project from 4.6 to 4.7, now 4.7.2, large forested tarrain, whenever I put

point light on one specific map, others work fine, fps drops dramaticly. The only thing that solves the problem is deleting all the foliage. So far Ive tried migrating all the content from 4.6 to new blank 4.7, reducing foliage lightmap resolution and Ive tried to find which part of the foliage is causing the problem, without succes.

Reducing overall foliage number by half seems to help, but I dont want to do it and it works perfectly fine without reducing in 4.6.

Hi Mily2206,

As you may have read through the post with GreenWolf I was not able to reproduce this on my end. It does make it extremely hard to replicate something when it’s a single map in a single project that is causing the issue. I know in GreenWolfs case migrating all content to a new project resolved the issue.

I still want to investigate this some and some additional information would be helpful in doing so on my end.

  • How many instances of your Trees do you have in your level
  • I know you mention lightmaps, but just to make sure are you planning on using fully dynamic or stationary lighting for your level?
  • What are your hardware specs? (preferably attaching a DxDiag txt file would be helpful)
  • when you move your project to 4.7.2 how did you do it? Did you open a copy, convert, or use some other method when doing so?

In the mean time, I’ll see if I can get any further with this on my own.

Tim

Hi Tim,

  • Currently there are over 1200 instances.
  • Im using both stationary and fully dynamic lighting. I mentioned lighmaps because previously I wasnt able to build lighting on 4.7 at all, lovering foliage lightmap resolutions fixed that up.
  • Here’s diag
  • Ive tried every possible combination. Converting, creating a copy, creating a blank than migrating…

I continued trying to get a repro for this earlier but still didn’t get the same effect. Would you be willing to share the 4.6 version of the project and I can convert on my end and see if I’m seeing the same results? Since this is now happening for more than just the previous project I’d like to see about getting a repro and have an engineer investigate. Without a clear repro it’s likely to go unresolved since there is no real place to start.

If you’re willing you can send me a link with the download if you’d like to keep it private via the forums.

Let me know.

Sure Ill send it over the weekend.

I got similar drops, but luckily my lights are static, so when the lighting was built I gained all the frames lost back! Try rebuilding your lighting and use dynamic lights only where necessary!

Thing is I need dynamic light, my character is using a lamp during nightime and there are some other important moving lights.

No worries. Just let me know here when you’ve sent the link to me on the forums and I’ll have a look next week when I’m able.

Thanks!
