Black Texture in viewport

So I just started out with UE4. I have a low end laptop.

i am trying to make a room, put in textures and all from the basic content. but when i drag and drop the textures from content explorer onto a surface, the surface it stays black. and the texture somehow becomes small.

the light scone in the first pic is of the normal size, not scaled, so you have an idea of how small the textures become. this is when i click Play.
the second pic is the viewport. its all black. but in the tutorials, this does not happen. Can you please help me??

Also, i built lighting.

PS: i did change a few settings. maybe due to that, that the textures are all messed up. but i dont know how to change all the settings back to default. :frowning:

Regards.

Anyone?? Please help…

Please help.

Hi ancientMariner14,

I am looking into your issue. Unfortunately you have run into a bug. This particular bug is known, has been reported, and is being worked on currently. The Jira ticket number for this issue is UE-11368. I am watching this bug and I would be happy to let you know when changes have been made. If there is anything else that I help with just let me know.

Thank you for your patience while we work out this issue,

Thanks a lot .

I am moving to a more powerful rig shortly. With a HD7770 GPU. Will update this thread with my findings soon.

Regards,

Hello,

I moved on to my desktop. DxDiag attached… [link text][1]

I am having another issue here… In the viewport, the built in textures are showing up as much smaller. I have kept the normal sized chair to scale. Even if i use alignment to make it right, after building light, the texture go back to being small.

This is before building light. i had used alignment on the wall and floor BSPs to make the textures look right.

this is after building light. this is the state of the textures even as i drag and drop them from the content browser.

also, you have previously mentioned a Jira Ticket number. How do i track the work being done on it??

any updates??

any updates??

Hey AncientMariner14,

Ben actually got moved to another department last week so I’ll take this one over for him.

Unfortunately, there is no way for the public to track the status of any bug reports or feature requests that are put in. The ticket number is just a reference for you.

Once I’m back in the office tomorrow I’ll check the status of this issue (UE-11368) to see if any progress has been made. Also, keep in mind that this bug was entered less than two weeks ago and there may be no progress on it at the moment due to other issues already being worked on.

I will let you know what I find though.

For you second issue with teh moving the chair and then building lighting. that may just be that you need to increase your lightmap resolution for the floor.

When you move the chair it will use Dynamic lighting which give the more accurate look. When you build lighting the shadows get baked into the texture of the mesh the shadow is being cast onto. If the lightmap resolution is too low you get much lower quality shadows. Higher resolutions yield more accurate results.

Take a look at our Wiki Lighting Guide here for Troubleshooting: A new, community-hosted Unreal Engine Wiki - Announcements - Epic Developer Community Forums

i dont think you understood the issue. i am not talking about the shadows or the chair.

the basic textures that come with the engine become smallish after the lighting is built. i have to again select the surfaces and use Surface Default alignment to make it appear normal.

or am i not getting wat you said? i’m sorry, i just started out and am trying my hand at it after studying the video tutorial series.

Oops! No you’re right, that’s my fault. I think I had originally mis-read the post and was equating it something with shadows.

I see what’s going on with the textures now. We can chalk that one up to me being blind that day.

This actually is a known issue that was reported with UE-11368. It was fixed with CL-2487422 which can be implemented from GitHub if you’re using a Source Build of the engine. Or if you’re using the launchers binary version it will be available once 4.8 is released.

Thank you for your response Tim. I will be waiting for the 4.8 release for the fix.

Also, I am facing another issue since the past couple of days. The textures on BSP meshes randomly go into very low res mode; like old DOS Wolfenstein. These are the textures coming with the basic content. This issue was not there earlier, and i am pretty sure i did not do anything to change the lightmap settings or change any of the advanced settings.

Any issues that you are tracking relating to this??

Hey, another update. I just got word that the fix will be hitting earlier than 4.8. We tentatively have a hot fix scheduled for next week that will include this fix. Things can always change and this may get pushed back a little bit, but it’ll be very soon!

With your other issue, can you post a screenshot of that? I’ve not seen anyone reporting this kind of behavior that I’m aware of. The first thing to possibly check is to make sure that your Settings > Engine Scalability > is set it to EPIC.

Let me know.
