Search help

  • Simple searches use one or more words. Separate the words with spaces (cat dog) to search cat,dog or both. Separate the words with plus signs (cat +dog) to search for items that may contain cat but must contain dog.
  • You can further refine your search on the search results page, where you can search by keywords, author, topic. These can be combined with each other. Examples
    • cat dog --matches anything with cat,dog or both
    • cat +dog --searches for cat +dog where dog is a mandatory term
    • cat -dog -- searches for cat excluding any result containing dog
    • [cats] —will restrict your search to results with topic named "cats"
    • [cats] [dogs] —will restrict your search to results with both topics, "cats", and "dogs"

[4.7.3] - Generate Distance Field Performance Slower Than 4.7.2

Hey Guys,

Not sure if I should log this as a bug but it is a negative effect caused by the recent 4.7.3 hotfix. I am currently talking to Eric K. on another thread about having the re-import of a mesh crash on me, this is a new issue so I wanted to get another thread active to see if this is just me or more widespread so we can give the support staff as much info to get 4.7 as rock solid as it can get.

I apologize for not getting back to you on this issue sooner, but I did want to see if you are seeing improvements between generation in 4.7.3 and 4.7.5?

I have seen improvements since Eric. I no longer have 4.7.3 installed but it seems like everything has leveled out. I'd say we are all good but if this comes up, I'll let you know asap. Thanks again for the help Eric!

Hey MC Stryker -

We have tested with your model from the previous question and a absolutely blank project with default Distance Field Settings and between the two hotfixes we cannot see any appreciable difference in build times, both average in the neighborhood of 20 to 30 secs. for your asset.

Let me know if you can find any additional information for us to test -

Hey Eric,

Much appreciated and thanks for looking into it! I'm noticing this across the board on my project upon first open. I'm not sure we can dig further without me sending you the entire project. How about this, can you have a tech open the Elemental Demo on a brand new 4.6.1 version of the engine. Then do the same on 4.7.3 and see if there is a noticeable difference?

Maybe it's more noticeable when you have a bunch of assets that are all being done at once but it was much longer to get things loaded than I've experienced in past builds. It might not be the distance field generation and could relate to a task that happens upon initial load but makes it look like distance field gen could be a little slow since it's taking up a lot of CPU resources.

Let me know what else I can test on my end and thanks again Eric!

Hello -

I have tested with Elemental Demo and could only derive a 40 second difference between the time, which isn't great enough to offer a statistical difference between the build times. I did want to ask for both of your Distance Field Questions, what resolution are you using for your meshes?

Hey Eric,

Thanks for trying to test that and bummer it didn't yield any results. Okay so I just checked and this model is currently set to a resolution of 1. I want to say 99% of the models are at 1 with the exception to I think 3.

Aside from the compilation of shaders and distance field gen, is there anything else that runs that initial time upon loading a project for the first time? I'm wondering if the perf difference in this case is coming from something else.

Keep me posted. I'm spending the day updating my video submission for the Epic Dev Grants program so I'll be in my build all day if you want me to try something out for you.
