Is it possible to scale a landscape, or import a height map, referencing real world measurements?

Hi,

I am trying to import a height map to make a landscape 6.815km square (I have a specific interest in recreating a real area for an educational project I am involved with).

I have used a program called TerreSculptor and managed to figure out that if I import a 2662 x 2662 pixel heightmap, I get a terrain which measures 6.81km square. Is the resolution of my height map also going to determine the size of my terrain in UE4? And if so, what is the correct conversion from pixels to km?

If I use this map to try and create a terrain in UE4 the scale is way too small. I found the scaling controls for the landscape but without knowing how big it imported to begin with, I have no way of knowing how much (in %) to scale it up by.

Any help is greatly appreciated. This is such an amazing piece of software, I have dreamed of something like this coming along since wrestling with Worldcraft in the 90’s. Yes, I’m old now.

Thanks community. x

This may not be exactly what you are looking for, but I found this while searching the forums:

According to the information listed, 1 UU (Unreal Unit) = 1 cm. Also, it mentions changing the FBX export unit prefrences in your modeling software (3ds, Maya, Blender etc…)

I hope this got you in looking in the correct direction, until someone more knowledgeable comes along…

Thanks mdmoberly, the link definitely has some useful info and the UU tip is great. The FBX importer isn’t an option for me though because I don’t have 3dsmax, I am just using a PNG height map to create the terrain directly in UE4.

However, knowing the UU scale now means I can import my terrain and scale it until it is the same size as a pre-made object measuring 681,500 cm (UU’s). It’s a bit of a work around but ok for what I need.

Thanks again.

Awesome! Glad to hear!
and you are very welcome!

I’m working on it, to have a direct match directly on heightmap. I’ll keep you updated, I’m nearly there. And thanks for the workaround!

Here I am, I finally got a perfect match!
There is some simple math involved, nothing fancy and you must be horribly precise in project setup, BUT IT WORKS.

Follow these stubs and you can do whatever you want with landscapes…I’ll update my tutorials ASAP.

Unreal wiki appears to be down,
Im doing a GIS integration project and was wondering if i could get some of your formula/resources.
