Particle rendering, distance dependable?

Hello! So I’m trying to make a waterfall effect using particle systems. Only issue is that I have smoke emitting close to the water surface itself, and it seems to render differently based on the distance from the camera. When I’m far away, it doesn’t render the smoke undernearth the translucent water surface, however, when I get close, it does render.

What I would actually like to do, is to NOT render my particle system undernearth the translucent water surface at all, so that it’s only visible above the water surface! I’ve tried adjusting the Translucency Sort Priority of the water surface, without luck. Any other ideas?
