Editor Issues on OS X

I’m seeing some odd and rather challenging issues using Editor on my late 2013 “trashcan” Mac under OS X 10.10.2. For instance, editor will get laggy and performance drops through floor even I’m doing nothing but launching it and letting it run in background. It doesn’t seem to matter which project, how complex scene, etc. Things just get worse and worse until I have to restart editor. That gets me back to a useable state. However, I’ve found only way to get things going as fast as I would expect them to is to reboot. That gets things going smoothly for a bit, but then it slowly spirals downward again.

I’ve also noticed an issue where when selecting a node, say in material editor, I have to wait a second or two before trying to edit a parameter. If I don’t wait, it doesn’t recognize interaction as being with details panel, and sends click down to view window, thereby deselecting node I want to edit. I’ve seen this happen in all editors. I’m not sure if it’s tied to poor performance or not, but I have noticed it is far more likely to happen on my 6,1 model Mac Pro at work then my 5,1 model Mac Pro at home, which I am surprised by considering just how much more powerful 6,1 model is in comparison. However, I am running a nVidia 970 at home vs dual D700s in 6,1 at work, so it is possible that we’re looking at an nvidia vs ATI issue. I also have a multi-display setup at work, and a single display at home. I’m using web drivers from nVidia at home. Does anyone know if ATI has something equivalent I could try?

Lastly, sometimes mouse icon seems to become offset from where it clicks. This only happens on my work system. I found an AH entry saying that issue was caused by multi-display setups but was supposedly fixed several versions ago, so maybe it just snuck back in. Please let me know if there’s any info I can provide to assist in tracking down any issues. I’m happy to run any tests or beta code that may be needed to help out. Cheers,

Hi J,

You’re using 4.7.3, correct? Take a look in Editor Preferences > General > Miscellaneous and disable Use Less CPU when in Background, and see if that has any impact. That’s really designed more for laptops, and switching back and forth between editor and other apps could possibly be causing some slow down. It’s possible disabling this will alleviate some of other issues you’re having.

issue with offset mouse position has been fixed, but it wasn’t implemented in 4.7.3. It should be included in 4.8 release. If you’re building from source on GitHub, I may be able to find commit for you, just let me know.

We haven’t seen most rest of these issues before, but we’re going to try to reproduce on some of our machines. Can you give us specs for each of Mac Pros you’re using? Thanks!

Sure thing. Here’s a full system profiler report from each:

But to save you from parsing through those if you don’t want to, I’ll take screen grabs of main info. Is there anything else I can provide?

I should be able to later today. Cheers,

Thanks! I’ll let you know if we need anything else. Were you able to test whether disabling Use Less CPU in Background editor preference helped at all on either machine?

I was able to replicate “click through details panel” issue today with Use Less CPU In Background setting turned off…

Hi JJ,

Sorry for delay. We’ve tested this on our machines here and haven’t been able to reproduce. Does click-through happen on work machine as well? This is what we tested with:

Mac Pro, Late 2013

OS: Mac OSX Yosemite 10.10.2

PROCESSOR: 3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5

MEMORY: 16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ECC

GRAPHICS: AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB

3 x HP Z Displays

Is click-through problem only issue still happening? Or are you still seeing performance drop over time?

Weird. It looks like none of my responses have posted… Yes, it’s still happening. As is general slow down. It seems like more times I “play in editor” slower things get, and slower things get more likely “click through” issue occurs.

Hi JJ,

Sorry for delay in response. We’ve been looking into this, but we still can’t reproduce editor slow down nor click-through, though latter is probably happening because of slow-down. This sounds like a memory leak, which is being investigated separately now, though I don’t know why it would happen in a new project if that were case. We’ll keep looking into it.

For offset-clicking issue, we’re still trying to narrow down a consistent reproduction but it has been seen here occasionally and it is being investigated. workaround has always been to adjust editor window size and it fixes itself. If you’re able to give us any better reproduction steps in a template project for that, please let us know.

For now, I’m going to resolve this post, but please feel free to update it with more information if you come across it, and I will let you know if we have any other questions. Thanks for your patience as we improve engine on OSX!

Very well. If you have anything you’d like me to do, either testing code or gathering additional data when I am experiencing issue, just let me know. Cheers,

Just to update this bug, I am still seeing it under 4.8 preview 2.
