Recommended VNC Solution?

Hey All,

I currently have a UE4 subscription but my laptop is not powerful enough to use UE4. I ended up installing the engine on a household desktop gaming machine but its a desktop and not very mobile. So I thought, What about VNC? I have used VNC viewers in the distant past but they were always pretty slow. Does anyone know of a good VNC Viewer for Macbook Pro and VNC Server for Windows that will provide realtime streaming and testing (did I mention that the desktop is a beefy gaming machine?). Preferably open source.

UPDATE:

Okay. I tried Splashtop and this streams nearly without any lag. Only issue I am having is with keyboard input. If I hold down the w key in play mode, I dont run, I sort of skip as if I am tapping the w key over and over.

The key restriction here will be the speed of your internet connection. Regardless of which solution you use I don’t think you are likely to find that your connection is responsive enough to deliver satisfactory experience. By and large the specifications for the beefy gaming box won’t alter this - remote access software is often designed to be bandwidth efficient, not realtime-responsive.

Having said that, I’ve had some success with Teamviewer, which is not open source but free for your own personal use, when I’ve needed to remote into a colleague’s machine to make a minor alteration or two with a level they are working on.

Newer versions of Windows support hardware acceleration over RDP I believe, which could potentially be better, but may not work with third party clients.

seeing though this is a local area network, wouldn’t response times be far better than if I was connecting from outside the router?

This is true, but most remote desktop software isn’t designed to transmit more than 10 frames per second no matter how fast the connection.

Thanks for reminding me of the name of the accelerated RDP system. The issue is he’s talking about a Mac client - I don’t think theres a supported remotefx-compatible client available on that platform. Any idea about HDX’s cost? Looks more targeted at enterprise-level from what I can see.

Team viewer works kinda ok and its free. But I recommend citrixs hdx or windows remotefx for better perfomance.
