What's wrong with this grass?

I’m trying to learn about lighting and really have NO IDEA how or where to begin…I mean i understand the different lights and how to operate them but thats it.

I figure this its a lighting problem…but this grass is completely black once facing the light…is there an Explination? or something im doing wrong? or something I can change?

Sorry…it only shows the pic of the grass being black but both pics are there.

  • which lights do you use? (static or dynamic?)
  • do you use the new foilage shading blend mode in your material?
  • are those custom made meshes or some from speedtree?
  • which version do you use?

Mt apologies for lack of info.
I’m using 4.6.1 these are meshes I’ve gained but not from speed tree.
But very similar to the grass foliage from the effects cave.
The light is dynamic I’d assume. It’s set to moveable.
It’s a spot light and it’s casting shadows.
I guess I didn’t know of the new foliage shading blend?
Is this something I should become familiar with?

Thanks!

The foilage blend mode is just available in 4.7 so you will have to update. It could might be that it fixes your problem + it will even look better

The black thing could be caused by the shadows that are casted by the meshes + the vertex normals that are pointing into the wrong direction. What happens when you add a skylight?

.4.7 material setup:

This is my material for the grass. I have mine setup a little differently…
I have an AO map there but don’t…really know how to use it?? if you could shed some light??
I don’t have cast shadows selected in the foliage editor, and in this picture i’m using a skylight,.

OH!! lol OK! I was afraid of updating because there’s a ton of script in a couple enemies…i was afraid I’d have to jump all over the place and fix things…and I know the editor is different in 4.7
i know…those probably aren’t good reasons.
Installing now.

  1. make sure that you are in version 4.7
  2. in the left window under shading mode your will have to choose “foilage shading”
  3. connect the diffuse texture with the basce colour and the subsurface colour
  4. the ao map needs to be connected with the ambient occlusion

Ok, it’s because of the vertex normals. Create such a material and see if it solves the problem (will work with 4.6):

Also set the environment colour to something brighter + disable “cast shadow” in the skylight

INCREDIBLE!! Thank you!

Hi!

I am getting the same. Any idea why?
