Is it possible to make a material blend reference an existing material?

I’m curious if it’s possible to make a material blend with a base of a material that already exists in the project, to avoid needing to have duplicate entries for the same type of material with things like burns or opacity masks.

You would need to setup the base material as a Material Function then you can reference it in a Material Blend.
