Custom character animations within UE4

I have 3d characters with skeletal structures that I want to animate in the UE4 itself.

So, I create a new animation and I can manipulate all the bones, and even add keyframes, but the whole thing is limited to 1 frame (1/24 sec). I can’t find an option to increase this… What am I doing wrong?

Also, are there any tutorials on animating custom characters in UE that don’t involve other software (e.g. maya)?

Any info appreciated,
Thanks

Hi tbob418!
Did you find solution?

Hey Acrossfy,

The closest to a solution I got is from this thread:

Basically, recording an empty animation gives you as many frames as you want but it is not very flexible and will probably cause headaches when trying to use the animations in game (I’m not there yet, looking into other options).

If you have the same problem, with 3d character models skeletons incompatible with EU4 (making the default anims unusable) you may have some luck with animation retargeting, for example: - YouTube , although that video still deals with default skeletons…

I’ve put the whole thing on hold for now. Seems like there are two options for now; try to make custom animations in EU4 (which will undoubtedly look amateurish) and have fun making it work properly in game, or use 3ds max/Maya/Blender to create the characters (major time sink since I don’t know how to model 3d chars), however, then the available animations solve the animations problem. There is a motion capture animation pack that came out on the market a couple of days ago that has 180 different animations.

For me personally, it seems like the best option is to use the Animation Rigging Tools with Maya (which is broken for me atm ;S) and then learn to add textures and meshes to the characters.

It seems I’m one of the few who feels like UE4 should have more comprehensive options for animations; it is after all, one of the engines features, and yet everyone including Epic Games is actively diverting people to 3rd party software -.-.

Good Luck,
