I see examples like these
but there is no node named MaterialSpriteElement I can find in blueprint and no variable type of that either, what the heck happened?**

It does appear that this struc was removed between 4.5 and 4.6, I have asked our engineers to look into the issue and add it back in if possible, for reference UE-13892. As soon as I hear anything back I will report here.
