Unreal Engine 4 Freezing

I have been using Unreal and it randomly locks up my computer and i have to force restart. I have been having this issue throughout all 4.7 cycles now. What is causing this problem?

I already posted this question in detail but forgot the tags and when I clicked Ask Question it completely erased my text without giving an error....

Hi SilverNeon,

Sorry about your troubles with your first AnswerHub post. Can you give us some of those details now?

  1. Please save and attach your dxdiag

  2. Did this happen before 4.7, in earlier versions?

  3. What are you doing, generally, when the freeze occurs?

  4. Does it eventually crash if you leave it, and if so, can you submit the Crash Report and copy/paste the details here for us? A crash log in that case would also be helpful

  5. Does this happen in new projects as well, or only your current projects?

Any other details that might help us track down the source of the problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  1. have attached the file.

  2. have only used Unreal Engine since version 4.7 and up. 3.Generally freezing seems to occur most in the editor and not while in game.

  3. Yes, their have been times when I have left it and come back and it has frozen. Where can I find the Crash report/log file?

  4. It doesn't seem to matter which project I am in or whether its an SS Hardrive or a Sata one.

Other details : Average FPS in the editor is 50-70 and general Editor use is a bit slow compared to other engines like Unity.

Same problems here, I can't copy any log or crash report because I must restart the PC every time. To me seems the problem apear random but should be a reason of course. No idea why. I try to install old drivers for NVIDIA card , but not solve the issue.

Is like the GPU not response because if I have a youtube video I can hear the video but the images not update, The click on the toolbar icons etc.. don't do anything

I Use windows 7 and GTX 550Ti

avatar image SilverNeon Apr 18 '15 at 02:03 PM

I am glad I am not the only one, I use a much older graphics card, I was worried it might be because my GPU does not meet the minimum specs but glad that's not the reason, Phew!

avatar image Lui Apr 20 '15 at 07:00 PM

I install Nvidia Drivers 341.44, for now , 1 complete day without freeze

avatar image Lui Apr 21 '15 at 06:02 PM

Again the problem , I check the Ram with the windows tool mdsched.exe, all fine. I install again NVIDIA drivers 350.12, I will try to find how check the GPU memory.

The problems start around the 4.7.4 -4.7.5 and after trying to load the kite demo (if I not remember wrong). I remember when I tried to load the included maps , my pc Temperature was height for long time (compiling etc) and my PC looked frozen so I reboot my PC by brute force (due the temperature). Could this act damage some component on my PC?

Hey guys,

@Lui Your temperature investigation was my first thought as well. What temps are you reaching on CPU and GPU? Also, dxdiag info please.

@SilverNeon Do you have any hardware temperature monitors? If so, can you keep an eye on them and let me know what your CPU and GPU temps get to?

Another thing I'd like you all to look for is the saved/logs folder inside of your project. This will contain logs and possibly crash dumps. If it happens again, grab the latest log(and crash dumps) and attach them here. You may need to zip them.

Hi Matt the temperature of my CPU was about 75 °. I use AI suite II for monitoring temperatures, so in theory the PC reboots when it reaches a limit (I have no idea of limit, I never reached that limit). From the 72º begins to notice that I am exceeding the recommended temperature. GPU I have no idea of the temperature. I know the temperature can cause bad voltage form the power supply so before it happened something i preferred reboot by the brute force.

The normal temperature is at about 50 degrees for the CPU. Usually when I have to compile long time (not at that time because I had no idea how long will take), I limit the amount of cores used by Unreal Engine, I have 4 and use 3, more slow but no temperatures above 72º. My fans were new, changed recently (https://twitter.com/LluisGarcia3D/status/574182987996205056). I have 4 fans , 1 for the CPU, 1 on the GPU and 2 extra (120mm)

I must say that this problem appear also when I not use Unreal engine, at first I thought was related with the browser (firefox and flash etc..) but I change to chrome and is the same.

I found how get the dxdiag so I inlcude here.

Hey Lui,

Can you run Open Hardware Monitor to get your GPU temps?

Do you ever get those voltage warnings form AI Suite? I use that at home and I know it sometimes throws those up.

How many watts is your power supply?

As it happens outside of the editor and your system is straddling the bottom end of our system requirements, I can imagine that the editor would consistently produce enough strain on your PC to cause this issue. (gtx 550 actually is a lower performer than the gtx 470 that marks the low end of our requirements). Unfortunately there's not a whole lot we can do on our end.

I know, no problem, I just trying to get a clue about what may be going to my PC, because, perhaps coincidentally, problems began after trying to load KiteDemo maps and restart the PC and I thought could be related or some file from 4.7 updates could cause this problem.

On voltage, no I have not experienced this problmea on this occasion. I know that heat can cause problems with him voltaje, because long ago I had 2 fans broken and some other issues, so the PC temperature reached more than 90º, and at that point the PC turn off itself because the +3V not have the power required (caused by the temperature)

This time, I think the temperature or voltage are not the cause of the freeze, since I have not noticed any irregularities when happens.

I know My GPU is a bit old and low specifications, some times is slow (eg elemental demo, 25 fps in the editor and 3 fps when at runtime GPU particles appear) but I was able to work smoothly with EU4 from a year ago, even forcing the PC and nothing like that happened (freezing, low voltage).

Here a picture of my power supply specs( I thinks is fine) : alt text

I saved 3 files with data from Open hardware Monitor.

The first collects the data from the PC after haver played GTAV about 3 hours, with no other programs running.

The second PC data with elemental demo project open (24fps) Third, data from the PC running elemental demo (3fps)

I think the temperatures are fine , GPU arround 75/80 º

My 2 extra fans are conected direcly to the power supply (12 V each)

If you find something that I don't know recognize with this data , please let me know ;)

I just see a message from AI suit maybe is related but no idea.

The mesage was "warning Vcore = 0v ",or something like that, nothing happen I just see for 1 second , but all seems normal no crash no freeze etcc. I was surfing with firefox

Hey Lui,

One more thing to narrow down if this is hardware or something with UE4 would be to download 4.1.2 and Elemental (4.1.2) and see if you still get the freezing.

-Matt W.

avatar image Lui Apr 27 '15 at 06:04 PM

For the above tests I use the version 4.7.6. Previously I uninstall the engine due to update problem on 4.7.6 trougth launcher (know bug for updates).

Since I installed the version 4.7.6 I have not had the problem of freezing, but I observed some issues with Ai suit II, like the Vcore 0V or "motherboard = -1 Celsius".

These problems however did not produce any freeze or reboot or anything like that. the PC was still functioning normally

So I uninstalled the AI suit and now all is fine, I monitored the PC with Open harware monitor all these weekend and I not saw any irregularity. Also no freeze in all these weekend

Next weekend I will install the 4.7.5/ 4.7.4 versions and see what happen , in case I had the freezing problem again I will inform you.

Greetings!

Hey Lui,

Glad it hasn't been freezing on you lately. Let me know if anything else occurs.

My issue also happens outside the Unreal Editor but I know with the Unreal Editor it happens WAY more often.

I read somewhere it could be a Bios issue with my Asus Maximum, maybe theirs a voltage problem....but going to the manufacturer leads me to be very confused, theirs a lot more files there than it should be but I still don't know if that's it.

I am running the Elemental on Epic settings with my Radeon 5700 Series card and despite only getting 20 Fps average my system CPU temps are 40 and GPU are 45 degrees C

I have attached the Log of the most recent victim.link text

logs.zip (422.3 kB)

Actually I just spotted something very strange but I don't really know whats up, something is showing very high Degrees C, over 100 and I don't even know what it is since it seems separate from the CPU and GPU.

Hey SilverNeon,

Those temperature readings can be misleading sometimes. HWMonitor is just getting data from the mobo that it doesn't know how to interpret. That's just a result of there being so many various mobo's out there.

Generally when you are running the editor though, you aren't getting 36 degree GPU temps. I'd expect that to be up closer to 60 or higher, especially on a card that's below our min spec. Was this taken with the editor running?

Also how many watts is your power supply?

-Matt W.

avatar image SilverNeon Apr 23 '15 at 08:50 AM

Hi there yes it was taken while the elemental demo was running, If you could recommend a better Temperature monitor that would help because It would help me if I could get a more accurate option. My power supply is 750 Watts.

I am having this issue as well in 4.9.1

I honestly have frozen my computer in my project from the first 5 seconds with my map open in my project... other times 10 minutes in... It seems kind of random and i dont understand...last night i froze 3 times in a row.... all in that project in that map... I havent made any substantial changes to it so this makes me nervous... I need to get back to work, but right now it seems like i cant!

I uploaded my dx diag. Seems like this is a recurring problem.. ive seen other spots on answers.unrealengine.com that i have replied to regaurding this... Need help asap...
