Unreal Engine 4 Freezing

I have been using Unreal and it randomly locks up my computer and i have to force restart. I have been having this issue throughout all 4.7 cycles now. What is causing this problem?

I already posted this question in detail but forgot tags and when I clicked Ask Question it completely erased my text without giving an error…

Hi SilverNeon,

Sorry about your troubles with your first AnswerHub post. Can you give us some of those details now?

  1. Please save and attach your dxdiag
  2. Did this happen before 4.7, in earlier versions?
  3. What are you doing, generally, when freeze occurs?
  4. Does it eventually crash if you leave it, and if so, can you submit Crash Report and copy/paste details here for us? A crash log in that case would also be helpful
  5. Does this happen in new projects as well, or only your current projects?

Any other details that might help us track down source of problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

1.I have attached file.
2.I have only used Unreal Engine since version 4.7 and up.
3.Generally freezing seems to occur most in editor and not while in game.
4. Yes, their have been times when I have left it and come back and it has frozen. Where can I find Crash report/log file?
5. It doesn’t seem to matter which project I am in or whether its an SS Hardrive or a Sata one.

Other details : Average FPS in editor is 50-70 and general Editor use is a bit slow compared to other engines like Unity.

Here is DXDIAG FIle sorry forgot to upload it to first post haha.link text

Same problems here, I can’t copy any log or crash report because I must restart PC every time. To me seems problem apear random but should be a reason of course. No idea why. I try to install old drivers for NVIDIA card , but not solve issue.

Is like GPU not response because if I have a video I can hear video but images not update, click on toolbar icons etc… don’t do anything

I Use windows 7 and GTX 550Ti

I am glad I am not only one, I use a much older graphics card, I was worried it might be because my GPU does not meet minimum specs but glad that’s not reason, Phew!

I install Nvidia Drivers 341.44, for now , 1 complete day without freeze

Again problem , I check Ram with windows tool mdsched.exe, all fine. I install again NVIDIA drivers 350.12, I will try to find how check GPU memory.

problems start around 4.7.4 -4.7.5 and after trying to load kite demo (if I not remember wrong). I remember when I tried to load included maps , my pc Temperature was height for long time (compiling etc) and my PC looked frozen so I reboot my PC by brute force (due temperature). Could this act damage some component on my PC?

Hey guys,

@Lui Your temperature investigation was my first thought as well. What temps are you reaching on CPU and GPU? Also, dxdiag info please.

@anonymous_user_27bbf808 Do you have any hardware temperature monitors? If so, can you keep an eye on them and let me know what your CPU and GPU temps get to?

Another thing I’d like you all to look for is saved/logs folder inside of your project. This will contain logs and possibly crash dumps. If it happens again, grab latest log(and crash dumps) and attach them here. You may need to them.

Hi temperature of my CPU was about 75 °. I use AI suite II for monitoring temperatures, so in theory PC reboots when it reaches a limit (I have no idea of limit, I never reached that limit). From 72º begins to notice that I am exceeding recommended temperature. GPU I have no idea of temperature. I know temperature can cause bad voltage form power supply so before it happened something i preferred reboot by brute force.

normal temperature is at about 50 degrees for CPU. Usually when I have to compile long time (not at that time because I had no idea how long will take), I limit amount of cores used by Unreal Engine, I have 4 and use 3, more slow but no temperatures above 72º. My fans were new, changed recently (https://twitter.com/LluisGarcia3D/status/574182987996205056). I have 4 fans , 1 for CPU, 1 on GPU and 2 extra (120mm)

I must say that this problem appear also when I not use Unreal engine, at first I thought was related with browser (firefox and flash etc…) but I change to chrome and is same.

I found how get dxdiag so I inlcude here.

My issue also happens outside Unreal Editor but I know with Unreal Editor it happens WAY more often.

I read somewhere it could be a Bios issue with my Asus Maximum, maybe theirs a voltage problem…but going to manufacturer leads me to be very confused, theirs a lot more files there than it should be but I still don’t know if that’s it.

I am running Elemental on Epic settings with my Radeon 5700 Series card and despite only getting 20 Fps average my system CPU temps are 40 and GPU are 45 degrees C

I have attached Log of most recent victim.link text

Actually I just spotted something very strange but I don’t really know whats up, something is showing very high Degrees C, over 100 and I don’t even know what it is since it seems separate from CPU and GPU.

Hey Lui,

Can you run Open Hardware Monitor to get your GPU temps?

Do you ever get those voltage warnings form AI Suite? I use that at home and I know it sometimes throws those up.

How many watts is your power supply?

As it happens outside of editor and your system is straddling bottom end of our system requirements, I can imagine that editor would consistently produce enough strain on your PC to cause this issue. (gtx 550 actually is a lower performer than gtx 470 that marks low end of our requirements). Unfortunately there’s not a whole lot we can do on our end.

Hey SilverNeon,

Those temperature readings can be misleading sometimes. HWMonitor is just getting data from mobo that it doesn’t know how to interpret. That’s just a result of there being so many various mobo’s out there.

Generally when you are running editor though, you aren’t getting 36 degree GPU temps. I’d expect that to be up closer to 60 or higher, especially on a card that’s below our min spec. Was this taken with editor running?

Also how many watts is your power supply?

-.

Hi there yes it was taken while elemental demo was running, If you could recommend a better Temperature monitor that would help because It would help me if I could get a more accurate option. My power supply is 750 Watts.

I know, no problem, I just trying to get a clue about what may be going to my PC, because, perhaps coincidentally, problems began after trying to load KiteDemo maps and restart PC and I thought could be related or some file from 4.7 updates could cause this problem.

On voltage, no I have not experienced this problmea on this occasion. I know that heat can cause problems with him voltaje, because long ago I had 2 fans broken and some other issues, so PC temperature reached more than 90º, and at that point PC turn off itself because +3V not have power required (caused by temperature)

This time, I think temperature or voltage are not cause of freeze, since I have not noticed any irregularities when happens.

I know My GPU is a bit old and low specifications, some times is slow (eg elemental demo, 25 fps in editor and 3 fps when at runtime GPU particles appear) but I was able to work smoothly with EU4 from a year ago, even forcing PC and nothing like that happened (freezing, low voltage).

Here a picture of my power supply specs( I thinks is fine) :

I saved 3 files with data from Open hardware Monitor.

first collects data from PC after haver played GTAV about 3 hours, with no other programs running.

second PC data with elemental demo project open (24fps)
Third, data from PC running elemental demo (3fps)

I think temperatures are fine , GPU arround 75/80 º

My 2 extra fans are conected direcly to power supply (12 V each)

If you find something that I don’t know recognize with this data , please let me know

I just see a message from AI suit maybe is related but no idea.

mesage was "warning Vcore = 0v ",or something like that, nothing happen I just see for 1 second , but all seems normal no crash no freeze etcc. I was surfing with firefox

Try out MSI Afterburner

Hey Lui,

One more thing to narrow down if this is hardware or something with UE4 would be to download 4.1.2 and Elemental (4.1.2) and see if you still get freezing.

-.

For above tests I use version 4.7.6. Previously I uninstall engine due to update problem on 4.7.6 trougth launcher (know bug for updates).

Since I installed version 4.7.6 I have not had problem of freezing, but I observed some issues with Ai suit II, like Vcore 0V or “motherboard = -1 Celsius”.

These problems however did not produce any freeze or reboot or anything like that. PC was still functioning normally

So I uninstalled AI suit and now all is fine, I monitored PC with Open harware monitor all these weekend and I not saw any irregularity.
Also no freeze in all these weekend

Next weekend I will install 4.7.5/ 4.7.4 versions and see what happen , in case I had freezing problem again I will inform you.

Greetings!
