Editor always crashes on launch

Hi,

since yesterday I am not able to run UE4 anymore. I am currently using UE4 4.7.6.

I am running Windows 8.1 (64 bit) on a i7 Quadcore with 8GB of RAM and GTX 860M with 2 GB dedicated video memory.

It doesn’t matter how I try to start the editor:

  • using Launch in from Launcher
  • open a project from Launcher
  • start editor directly from Binaries folder

It always goes to 35% before crashing all the time with the same call stack. I have attached a log file while trying to load a project. I wasn’t allowed to attach the dump file produced. I also let crash reporter send a report.

I couldn’t launch the editor for quite some time (it crashed) but opening a project worked fine and from there I could also create new projects. But now I can’t do anything with UE4. I even uninstalled and reinstalled everything on another partition but no success.

2 days ago I installed TADP and while packaging a project for Android my computer froze completly so I had to turn it off hard. I have already checked and repaired drive C:. I assume that something is screwed up in my system but don’t know what. I also have tried to remove intermediate files either from projects I tried to open or the derived data cache. No luck at all.

Any idea or suggestion is highly appreciated because I want to continue working with UE4.

Thank you very much.

Best regards,
Maik.

Hi mernst_dns,

Does this occur on a clean project with no additional content or is it limited to one project? Have you tried verifying your engine? If you go to the launcher>library tab and open the dropdown menu next to your engine version, press verify and let that run. If there are broken or missing engine files it will replace them.

Hi ,

this problem is not bound to any project. I tried several projects which were working before. But to answer your question: none of them were clean and contained additional content

I just re-run verify and it just backed up one file: Engine/Programs/UnrealBuildTools/BuildConfiguration.xml. In case it might help I’ve attached it. But it still crashes.

Maik.

Does your computer have troubles running any other program? Have you tried uninstalling the TADP information to see if it is the primary cause of the problem?

Hi,

sorry for the delay.

Infact there were other problems. My previous Visual installation was completely screwed. After several attempts to install and get it to run (it crashed when trying to update the license or signing in into MS account) I succeeded in getting Visual Community 2013 to run.

I also uninstalled tadp.

The bad news is it’s still crashing with the same callstack when starting from Launcher.

But I got a snapshot from GitHub yesterday as file and build the engine. It still crashes but it:

  • is going up to somewhat 90 % in the initializing phase thus surviving the 35% crash mark
  • crashing with a different call stack (which I have attached link text)

Additionally I have updated nvidia graphics driver today to 350.12

Currently I am cloning the engine sources directly from GitHub and when finished I’ll build again. But this might take some time I currently an incredibly slow internet connection.

Maik.

I’ll be honest, it sounds like either a hardware failure or a virus from what you’ve told me. The editor itself wouldn’t corrupt other programs, though if something was hiding behind the TADP that got picked up it could wreak havoc on a harddrive. Where did you pull the TADP from? Additionally, have you run a virus scan on your computer?

Hi,

I’ve got tadp directly from nvidia’s homepage but I downloaded 4.0 r1. This shouldn’t be a problem, should it?

Virus scan didn’t reveal anything serious.
Anyway I think turning off my computer must have screwed something really badly. Once I am back home I think I’ll re-install Windows.

If you got it from Nvidia’s homepage I wouldn’t be worried about any viruses for sure. However at this point it does sound like there may be something hardware related going on. If a reinstall of Windows does not fix the error, I would recommend taking it to be looked at so you can find out if anything specific is going on with your PC.

Hi,

as expected after reinstall of Windows everything seems to be back to normal. Thanks for your help. From my point of view this issue can be closed.

Hi mernst_dns,

Thank you for the update. I will mark this as accepted for tracking purposes.
