How do i need to create my Character Mesh for UE4?

Hi so I’m new to Unreal engine and I’m not sure if this is the appropriate topic but whatever.

So, I want to create my character and I have a few questions
1.Do I make it all in one editable poly / editable mesh or different meshes for each moveable part eg: arms , fingers

  1. Do the bones systems have any rules to follow like bone names etc, Note that this is NOT a humanoid
  2. for the animations , Do I make it in 3ds max or in unreal Engine ???

Thanks for any help, I use 3ds max for my modelling

Hey there,

note, i am not an artist, so i’m only commenting and not giving a real answer:

  1. This is really up to your Mesh. If you only need one mesh, then it is good to go with only one. If you have something like different helmets or something, then i would use a second mesh for the helm. Extra meshes for fingers seem a bit weird to me though.

  2. I don’t think so. As long as the bones work in your 3D Programm, the shouldn’t be a problem in UE4. Just export them an have a look. I did this in Blender and it all worked fine without even looking at the names.

  3. You better do Animations in your 3D Programm. They are suited for this. Unreal Engine Animations can be used to create new animations on the fly that aren’t very complex. Or to correct an animation that you made without going back into your 3D programm. But i wouldn’t use this to create full animations.
