Version 4.7.6 Freezing my PC

This isn’t so much a question as it is a public service announcement, as I have finally found the culprit behind why UDK has been constantly freezing my PC after roughly 10 second to 10 minutes of loading a project.

Unfortunately for me, 4.7.6 happened to be the latest version of UDK 4 before I hopped on the bandwagon and started planning out my game, and every time I would load a new project my computer would completely freeze after said time frame, and I would be forced to do a cold shut down. Flash forward 3 computer rebuilds (Several different type/brand GPU’s, RAM sticks, HDD’s/SSD’s, but did not try a different CPU or MOBO though), a clean install of windows 7, and several hardware tests later, I finally realized how silly I was for not trying a different version of UDK first, and lo and behold my computer no longer freezes after downloading 4.6.1.

I thought I should share my build for the record, incase anyone has a similar build and is experiencing the same problems, and also to hopefully provide useful feedback to the bug team in order to stabilize 4.7 in the future. If I did have a question, it would be, why cant we download other versions of 4.7 ? Such as 4.7.1? Thanks

Hey Axiom,

After looking over your computer specs, your RAM looks a bit low to run the Unreal Engine. While 4 GB will run the engine, it will not be able to run the engine at full capacity, which is likely why you continue to freeze when you switch projects or open new projects. I would suggest that overtime, you update the RAM to at least 8 but it’s highly suggested to have 16GB of ram, as it runs a lot smoother.

Also, the reason that you’re not able to download 4.7.1 version of the Engine from the Launcher is because each time a ‘hot fix’ is released, it patches that version of the Engine. So 4.7.6 was the highest version of ‘hot fixes’ for UE 4.7.

If you have any further questions, please reply back and I’ll be more than happy to assist you further.

Thanks!

Thanks but the only reason why I had 4 gigs of ram in the PC at this moment was because I was busy reassembling my computer for the 15th time and though I might as well check each stick individually, I typically do have the recommended 32 gigs of RAM when the problem occurs.

After more hardware tests I actually found that the problem was eliminated entirely when I used any other CPU besides the FX series architecture, I dont know why but UDK4 does not like the FX series, infact I just made another post about this, if you want you can even delete this post entirely
