Misplacement Pivot

Hello, I am using Unreal Engine 4 version 4.7.6. I’m having this problem where pivot is not on item. It is usually somewhere far from item and makes things very hard to maneuver. I have a small piece selected, it’s lying on floor, but cursor is above it. . .

Hey

Are you referring to pivot (, green, red arrows)? Also, are items you’re moving grouped together? If so, this is a bug that we are already aware of which is referred to as: UE-15516

Looking forward to hearing from you, thanks!

Yes, pivot. I forgot what it was called, so I always called it cursor. No, it wasn’t grouped with anything. I’m just moving one item at a time. It usually happens whenever I copy over one item, such as a wall or little piece (BSP)

Although, thanks for feedback!

Same issue here - pivot is offset when doing a reimport.

I don’t know how it works with 3D application you are using, but with 3ds , you need to position your object at (0,0,0) before exporting or else it will be imported to UE4 with an offset. I don’t know if your problem could be related to something similar.

No, but thank you for your input. I would always end up with an offset after I copy BSP, not when I import something.

It was working fine in earlier 4.7.x releases so it’s not related to Modo.

Hey,

I have not been able to reproduce pivot moving away from asset unless it’s grouped. I tried exporting and importing assets into project as well as copying and pasting objects around screen. This was attempted in both 4.7.6 as well as 4.8 Preview 2.

Since it was stated earlier that object isn’t set to (0, 0, 0) within modeling program, and when you re-import it or copy and paste it, pivot shows up incorrectly. Would either of you be able to try this while correcting translation of object in modeling software?

Looking forward to hearing from you all, thanks!

Was there a new change in FBX importer?

I’ve never had to 0 my transformation channel in modo in earlier version (4.2 onwards.)

Perhaps importer should have an option to drop transform channel on import?

Ah I didn’t realise you were working with BSP. I don’t think BSP is really recommended for use anymore.

Well, way I got problem was most likely because I copied a BSP over and over. Maximum of five times and resized it. I never imported anything from some 3D program as of yet. Again, thank you for all of your replies guys!

Hey

Please MMB on BSP and it should move pivot for you. This does work best over individual vertices. However, if you’re importing static meshes, then pivot is off because they didn’t zero out their object in modeling program before exporting. So what you can do for this issue is to zero out object location and re-export/import object back into editor.

I hope this information helps, if you have any further questions please let me know. Thanks!

I apologize for not knowing as to why BSP’s aren’t recommended, but may I ask why not? I was watching tutorials on and BSP’s were what instructor was using. I was using them to layout my level, evening adding textures to them. I’m just now getting myself into 3D modeling using Blender, so I have not yet imported a 3D model. Thank you or your response!

Hey

BSP’s should be used as placeholders in your level and eventually switched out for modeled geometry from a 3D modeling software. When you are finished importing an object over from Blender, please let me know whether or not you’re still seeing pivot reacting oddly for you.

Looking forward to hearing from you, thanks!

Sorry for late reply, but how do I MMB on BSP? I would have asked sooner, but my harddrive crashed and I had to start everything all over again.

Hey

MMB = Middle Mouse Button. On most mice, scroll wheel functions as a button.

That’s what I figured, but when I do pressed on middle mouse button nothing is happening or being moved. Is there anything else I can do?

Hey

I wanted to let you know that UE-15516 is still an issue within our editor, so if you’ve started using grouped items and you notice pivot is acting strange, it’s because of this bug.

However, I did check BSPs in 4.8.1 and I have yet to be able to replicate issue with pivot moving away from BSP. Have you tried upgrading to 4.8.1?

Looking forward to hearing back from you, thanks!

Yes I have upgrade to Unreal Engine 4.8.1, I have encounter problem once. But for me if it’s just one time then I don’t find it a problem. Thank you

Hey

Please let us know if you happen to run into this issue again. At this time, I will be marking this question as resolved. If you have any further questions, please let us know.

Have a great day!
