Map dissapeared from Project

Hi,

While I was building the static lighting, I had a bluescreen. (The 5th today).
After reboot and reopening the project, my level map has disappeared from the content browser.
The file itself is still in the folder, but I cant access it from within the editor.

I already tried deleting the Intermediate and saved folders, but the map keeps missing in the CB.

Any idea how I can recover my 150+ working hours map?

PS. Later it happened again…That time, I didnt have any crash, just normally closed and reopened theditor…
When I saved the map, it was there, visible in the content browser.
On next startup, it was gone from the CB, but still there as a file…

Any idea why this is happening?

PPS: This is the third time now that I have to restart the project from scratch due to losing maps this way…

Cheers,
Klaus

Hey ,

Could you please try importing the .umap back into your project? You can do this by going to file > import and make sure that you select for Windows to show all files otherwise it doesn’t show up for you.

Also, would you please be able to send me your .umap file? If you do not want anyone to see this map, you’re more than welcome to provide the link to me in a private message on the forums.

Regarding the blue screen you keep seeing, typically this means that your hardware is failing. However that’s not always the case, it could be a memory leak that UE4 has that we haven’t seen before.

When you get the next blue screen, could you please write down the whole error message and provide that to me so I can investigate this further for you? And on that note, could you also provide me with your DxDiag , you can obtain them by searching for ‘DxDiag’ in the search bar in the start menu.

Looking forward to hearing back from you, thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for your reply

I tried the following:

-Copying the map file into the content folder of another project.
Result: The map didnt show up there

-Tried to import the map, but .UMAP files are not supported by the filename extension filter on the import dialog.
(As you can see, the other map, poetically named “KakaFuja” is visible and perfectly ok.)

-I just tried the Redirector-Fixup routine
Result: Map still not visible.

I removed some of the assets that ere not in use anyway, so the project is now small enough to be sent.
You can download it here:
[Project][2]

Let me know if you can see the map

Thanks again

Cheers,
Klaus

What would strongly point to that: I made an experiment today where I restarted the editor in 45 minutes intervals. That helped a lot in terms of stability.
As for the hardware, its the same hardware that lets me work for 18 hours straight with 3DsMax, Modo, Photoshop, etc. without problems. Even an intensive POVRay session cant make the machine tremble… So its realy not the hardware in this case.

Will do

Sorry to say but it’s most likely gone, I had the exact problem and staff couldn’t do anything.

Anyways let me know if there is a solution, I’d be very glad to hear it!

Hey,

Thanks for giving me this information. I’m currently working within your project and you’re totally right, the map isn’t loading properly. I’m going to continue to attempt a few things to fix this and I’m going to be sending this to a developer as well for some additional assistance.

In the meantime, I need to ask whether or not you have a back up of your project that you’re able to open? If so, could you provide that to us as well? I also want to know what you were doing each time your project map decided to not open again? Were you working with blueprints, were you just simply level designing, what was going on?

This information will greatly help us figure out what’s going on with your project, and hopefully what’s going on with 's project in the process as well.

I have entered a bug report for your specific issue as well, it’s referenced as: UE-16028

Looking forward to hearing back from you, thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for the check
What I was doing in each case is a bit of level designing and blueprinting.
I am designing some “smart” brushes, based on static meshes, so I can avoid the normal brushes
So I went back and forth between the level and my SmartBrush, SmartStairs, etc BPs

Unfortunately I dont have a backup.
Yes I know, shame on me…
In the future I will do regular backups

Many Thanks again for taking care of thisone

Cheers,
Klaus

Well, Thanks anyway for looking into this
A backup being not available, It seems I have to start again.
Another lesson well learned: Do backups, even in early stages of a project.

PS: suggested trying to import the map.
However, it seems that .UMAP files are not within the scope of the import filetype filter…
Did I miss something, or cant maps be imported?

Cheers,
Klaus

Hey guys,

When you’re using the import method, you’d want to use the File > Import, not the import from the Content Browser. I got it to work for me, but not with 's map he’s having trouble with. That actually is being investigated by developers at this time.

Thanks!

Hey Klaus,

Thanks for giving me additional information on what you were doing when you were creating your levels. I have added this information to the report.

I will update you when I learn more, thanks!

Hey ,

I have not heard from you in quite sometime and for that reason, I must ‘resolve’ this question at this time. However, if you have any further questions regarding this topic, please do not hesitate to reply back here and I will assist you further. For all other questions, please submit a new question to AnswerHub.

Thanks!

No Problem.
(I thought I had accepted the answer…)

I have the same issue. Is there a way to get the map back? My computer crashed hard playing a map. After restarting the computer, and reloading the project, the map is gone… When I try and import the map like mentioned above I just get an empty black map. Any help is more than welcome.

If you’re using File > Import and the map is still coming back completely blank, chances are that the map didn’t actually save. Have you checked all of the map files in your older project?

Thank you for the feedback. I started over from scratch and using Git now. To give more context: I was playing an already saved map when the computer crashed. So even if it did not save, it normally should have loaded the map in its state saved on disk. However I got just a black screen. Probably got corrupted or something? Not sure what you mean by older project but other maps in the project still loaded normally.
I hope I will not have this issue again but if so then Git should do its magic and provide me the previous version anyway.

I have the same problem.
When i open my project last night, he’s open with a diferent level to normal, when a try open the main level, he’s not in the project. I Don’t have a backup, for why i substitute he with this version.
What i do?
:frowning:

In my case the map could still be found using Windows Explorer. Try and find that and make a copy of it. Then you could try and manually see what the issue is and make some corrections. Afterwards you can always reimport the corrected map using the import function described above. In my case I just started from a new map. I am using Git now for version control which should minimise the impact if it does happen again. I hope the Epic development team is looking into this issue as this is clearly a nasty bug for users.

So many people have lost work from this myself included that it should be addressed, it’s a major problem with the engine. But my problem is that when i import it from File-import Nothing happens.

Thanks for reply u 2!
In my case, the map is visible in windows explorer, i try copy and open in new project, the loading screen is displayed, but after completed, nothing happens.

Hey Everyone,

Are your maps showing up and actually loading in the editor? If so, is there actually anything listed in the World Outliner? What version of the engine are you in?

Looking forward to hearing back from you all, thanks!
