APEX destructibles fail

Every time I try import asset from APEX physics lab I get this message. I tried all the formats, I tried loading the apex plugin for Maya. But, apparently, I cannot import APEX physics lab asset to Maya or from Maya to APEX, it just gives me errors.

What am I doing wrong? I need some destructibles for my project.

Hi Cruddynight,

Are you using PhysX Lab standalone application when creating the Destructible? If you’re using PXL, what program are you creating the mesh in? Is it Maya?

If you’ve got the Maya Plugin installed, what version of Maya are you currently using, and what version of the plugin are you using? Version 3.0.2?

I’ve tried this with 3Ds Max 2013 and 2014 with no issue.

Here are my steps?

  • Create Mesh in Max
  • Export to FBX
  • Import Mesh into PXL
  • Export as APB
  • Import to UE4

Are these the steps that you’re using as well?

Also, if you’re having this happen with any mesh that you create, can you attach a simple cube mesh to this post that fails on import, the APB created in PXL and the FBX used to create the destructible.

Thank you!

Tim

Hello Tim!

Yes, that’s exactly what I did.

PhysXLab version 1.1.103.1 (Beta)

Maya 2013

Creation of the Mesh in Maya, then to PhysXLab, destroy it in there, then export in APB, when I press import to UE4, i get the error straight away.

Hey, I’ve just had one of my colleagues create simple mesh in Maya 2014 (lowest version I have access to).

I brought that in to PXL and did a simple 25 chunk fracture on it, exported to an APB. I then imported into UE4 with no issue at all.

Would you be able to attach any APB asset that has failed to import for you before? I can test this on my end to make sure that it imports OK or if there is an issue.

I do recall there being a similar issue with a user in Russia who had a Cyrillic symbol in the user name for the computer that would cause cloth APX files to fail to import properly. A fix for that was recently implemented. If you do have a a Cyrillic symbol in your user name let me know and I’ll see what the status of the fixes integration is.

EDIT: actually looking back at your image above, I see it says your Computer name is “Alex” so that wouldn’t be the issue then, unless there is possibly Cyrillic somewhere else int he file path?

Awesome! I’m glad you’ve got it working. I was more worried that this was happening with any asset you brought in from Maya to PXL to UE4. At least it’s working for you now, which is what matters most!

Okay, fixed the issue.

I was trying to import one asset at all times. I tried creating a new one from scratch and it worked. So, it was a problem with an asset, instead of the PhysXlab. Thanks for the help though. Much appreciate it.

No, don’t worry about it. It’s probably bugged geometry with one of my assets.

Although, it is still impossible for me to import fractured mesh from APEX to Maya. Is it even possible?

This is possible. At least with in Max I can confirm it. I don’t use Maya, but the process should be the same or similar.

These are my steps:

  • Create your Mesh in Max/Maya
  • In Max/Maya on the PhysX Labs Toolbar Select the Destructible node (chemical container)
  • Select your mesh and choose the drop down that says “Fracture”
  • There will be an option for Fracture Method. This should only list “PhysXLab”
  • Under the PhysXLab Settings in this same panel, select “Fracture”
  • PXL standalone should open now.
  • Fracture your mesh like you want
  • In the top left is a save icon that if you hover over says “Save APEX for Max/Maya”
  • Click Save
  • Go back to Max/Maya and select your mesh
  • In the panel change the Depth Level to 1 or higher depending on your level of destruction.
  • You should now see your meshes fractures.

Maybe I’ve got the wrong version of Maya or something. I don’t have fracture option in my PhysXlab panel + I don’t have save for Maya option in PhysXLab. I should try reinstalling it.

Probably doesn’t need a re-install. I may have just not been clear enough explaining.

Here is a quick video I did of my steps: Dropbox - Error - Simplify your life

The DCC plugin should be similar I would imagine. I don’t have Maya so I can’t say with 100% certainty.

Let me know what you find.
