In Window->Developer Tools->Device Profiles (on Mac, haven’t confirmed if it’s also an issue on Windows), if you select the plus button next to a category to add a new variable, you are then unable to cancel out of the selection. Clicking off the popup doesn’t dismiss it, nor does pressing the escape key. Your only option at that point is to select a variable, then delete it.
Just checked 4.8, and the behavior is unchanged.

I just tested the issue you are reporting and was able to see what you are saying, but I was also able to leave the dialog menu by simply pressing the escape key twice after clicking the ‘Search’ bar field and activating the cursor within the dialog menu.
Use this as a temporary workaround until we can get a fix in place. I have entered a bug report for this issue UE-16446. Please let us know if you have any other questions or need additional assistance.
